Andrew Puzder’s Demise Spooks Future Trump Nominees
Let’s be clear-this is a feature not a bug. Not only were Democrats able to sink his nomination but future Trump nominees are spooked by it and complaining Trump isn’t doing enough to protect them.
“Trump’s nominees gripe the White House isn’t protecting them.”
“Shaken by Puzder’s torpedoed nomination, other contenders for Senate-confirmed positions say they need more cover from the White House.”
Of course, the success in torpedoing Puzder stemmed from the Betsy DeVos confirmation. She did eventually get in on the thinnest of margins-VP Pence had to break a tie-but after the dragged out process she faced, Tennessee’s Lamar Alexander demanded that future nominees must be better prepared than she was.
“Candidates for top jobs in President Donald Trump’s administration are getting spooked after Andrew Puzder’s nomination was scuttled and they fear the White House isn’t doing enough to protect them from grueling confirmations, according to several sources involved in the process.”
“The concerns are affecting not only some of the highest profile nominations, including agriculture secretary pick Sonny Perdue, but also candidates for ambassadorships, judicial positions and a range of other nominees. The chill that’s settled in even has some people considering bowing out of contention, meaning that Trump’s attempt to quickly fill out his government could drag out even further.”
“Again, I consider this a feature not a bug. One thing Trump could do for nominees is vet them properly before trotting them out. As usual, Trump’s arrogance, his sense of being above the process that other people have to follow is meant to cut through all the bull, but actually drags out the process much longer than it otherwise would.”
“While nominees like Perdue don’t have the same sort of baggage that Puzder did, Perdue and others are concerned about his lack of contact with White House chief of staff Reince Priebus and his office, according to two sources close to him. They’re also concerned about what their critics might dig up if their nominations linger in the Senate for weeks amid slow-walking by Democrats.”
“It’s been a month since inauguration. Why are some Cabinet nominees waiting on return calls from the White House?” said a GOP operative with knowledge of the process, who like other people quoted in this story requested anonymity to speak freely about the issue.”
Again, because Trump is arrogant and clueless and is way in over his head and yet thinks he’s doing fabulous.
Again, a couple things Trump could do would be nominees with less baggage and vet the nominees properly. The Dems have been aggressive-as they should be. But Trump certainly hasn’t helped himself be his arrogance and lack of attention to the process.
This was part of my argument for why it’s in the GOP’s interest to impeach Trump-sooner rather than later-but that they won’t do so.
They’d be much better with Mike Pence now. The Dems would still be a determined opposition but they wouldn’t have Trump shooting himself in the foot.
So much for Grover Norquist’s ‘Republican President with working digits and a pen.’
Trump is considerably less than that.
