Tom Perez: the Knives are Coming Out
I’ve stated more than once, I have no horse in this race. Whoever the DNC decides is the best person to lead is fine with me. I like both Tom Perez and Keith Ellison very much.
What I do resent is this game of litmus test politics like you see on the Left. Litmus test politics got us Donald Trump. Litmus test politics is where you are constantly closing the circle rather than expanding it.
You know: being a True Progressive means this, this and this. If you deviate then: you’re not a True Progressive. As Obama always puts it: I can agree with my fellow Democrats 90% of the time and it’s enough. We don’t have to agree 100% of the time. The Litmus Test Left thinks you do.
So in this race, some on the Litmus Test Left have insisted on construing the DNC fight not as pitting two qualified applicants who actually agree on a great deal but as yet another Cosmic fight between the progressive forces of Light and the evil, neoliberal forces of Darkness.
“The Democratic Party’s big political question right now is how best to harness the incredible anti-Trump energy among left-leaning Americans. Roughly speaking, the base wants a ferocious fight against President Trump, coupled to a strong program of social justice and left populism. The establishment, by contrast, wants a meager sprinkling of that program, but only insofar as it does not alienate the donor class.”
“That brings me to the upcoming election for leader of the Democratic National Committee. The two leading candidates are Tom Perez, secretary of labor under Obama and establishment team player; and Keith Ellison, a congressman from Minnesota and leading representative of the party’s Bernie Sanders wing.”
See? Here we go again: it’s the forces of Light-Bernie-vs the forces of Darkness-Hillary. This is the preference of the Litmus Test Left: everything has to be seen in Apocalyptic terms. We must have Ellison or we will fight Perez more than we’ll ever fight Trump.
Charles Pierce of Esquire was on Chris Hayes last night. Pierce has watched the Ellison-Perez campaign closely and says construing this fight as Hillary-Bernie is a very destructive way of seeing it. And he further pointed out something Ryan Cooper doesn’t get: the ferocious #Resistance to Trump is not about the Center vs. the Left. As Pierce-who was for Bernie in the primary-points out, the the #Resistance is not simply about Bernie.
Many in the #Resistance like myself are Hillarybots. Indeed, in many ways I think of this as Hillary Clinton protesters because when you talk to them the first thing they say is ‘I’ve never protested before.’
Those in the #Resistance are part of a large anti Trump movement not a sectarian group of Bernie Bros who care more about not taking corporate donations than defeating Donald Trump. Anyone concerned and outraged by Trump can join the #Resistance. We don’t first check to make sure you want to ban all fossil fuels. support a full federal $15 MW-and always have done-and you want to ban all ‘corporate donations.’
It’s like South Carolina Democratic Chairman Jamie Harrison put it-the Democratic party is in no condition to be turning down donations right now.
I noticed that Trump at the CPAC was again namechecking Bernie Sanders still selling that creative fiction that Bernie was robbed by the DNC. He also declared Bernie is right about trade. This doesn’t help Bernie any.
Indeed Sanders himself is showing that the #Resistance is not pro Bernie and anti Hillary by pushing hard for a real Russian probe. Bernie himself knows where the political winds are blowing.
Now the GOP already knows how they are going to hit Perez. They are-very wisely in light of the snark thrown at Perez from the Left-calling him a ‘tool of the big banks.’
One thing Keith Ellison is very right about is that anyone can be slandered and will be if they try to challenge power. It happened to Al Gore, John Kerry, Hillary Clinton. Now they will do everything they can to slander Tom Perez. We’ll see how much the Berners play right into their hands.
You know-as this same GOP installs Steve Mnuchin at Treasury, Bestsy DeVos at Education, and Wilbur Ross at Commerce.
P.S. If you enjoy my blog and my support of #TheResistance-I’m also considering a 2018 run against GOP Congressmen Peter King of the NY 2nd district-then please consider a donation.
