Never Underestimate Roger Stone, David Frum Edition
David Frum did just that on Lawrence O’Donnell Friday night. He suggested that in accessing whether the Trump team coordinated with Russia’s interference Roger Stone doesn’t count as he’s some sort of eccentric or outlier.
Frum is very anti Trump but he’s also still a Republican-he’s trying to square that circle. He may not want to admit then who Roger Stone is. But Stone is not at all peripheral in the history of the Republican party over the last 45 years. Quite the contrary.
“According to journalist Marc Ames, a longtime Stone-watcher, the mainstays of the Trump-Stone alliance are three:
- Roger Stone’s dirty tricks specialty is manipulating vote fractures, and weaponizing anti-establishment politics to serve the electoral needs of mainstream Republican candidates.
- Roger Stone and Donald Trump have been working together since the mid-1980s, mostly on sleazy campaigns to help Trump’s casino business, but also in politics.
- Roger Stone and Donald Trump worked together in at least two major “black bag” operations manipulating anti-establishment politics to help the mainstream Republican presidential candidate.
Trump’s own 2016 campaign turned out to be the ultimate black bag operation. Stone has been around. In 1972 he may have been the one to write that fake piece in the NH newspaper on Ed Muskie’s alleged racial slur about Canucks-he never said it. This led to his campaign vaporizing thus getting rid of who Nixon and Stone considered the biggest Democratic threat in that election.
Stone takes credit for taking out Elliot Spitzer, for leading the Brooks Brothers riot in 2000 that shut down the Florida recount-that had it been completed would have shown Gore the winner-as Mac Stipanovich himself concedes.
In 2004, Stone financed Al Sharpton’s Democratic primary campaign. Sharpton’s task was to call Howard Dean a racist and sink his campaign. Indeed, it’s debatable whether Sharpton didn’t endorse Hillary this year as he owes Stone and Trump so much: without that run he’d have never made it to MSNBC.
Indeed, you can’t help but wonder if Stone talked to the Reverend Al and persuaded him not to endorse her, either by carrot or stick-or both. Remember when Trump thanked African-Americans for not voting? In that regard Sharpton didn’t lift a finger to get turnout so he deserves a measure of that gratitude.
There are a few Theses of Russiagate I’ve urged Dems to observe:
1. Never underestimate Roger Stone
2. Never underestimate Louis Mensch
3. Never lose sight of the fact that Anthony Weiner was setup and catfished as Mensch has discussed in great detail.
Regarding Weiner others have suggested Stone had something to do with his being setup.
And just as on cue, Roger Stone had a meltdown on Twitter where he went after a lot of female pundits including Louise Mensch.
“Donald Trump isn’t the only one in full meltdown mode today over the latest revelations in the Russia scandal. Former Trump campaign adviser and longtime Trump friend Roger Stone, who according to the New York Times is being investigated by the FBI for having allegedly colluded with with Russian officials during the election, went nuts tonight on Twitter and began calling various female political pundits “fat” and “ugly” and worse.”
“Roger Stone is one of four former Donald Trump advisers who are alleged to have been caught on a wiretap regularly colluding with Russian government representatives during the course of the campaign, along with Michael Flynn, Carter Page, and Paul Manafort. Trump went nuts this morning and randomly (and falsely) accused President Obama of having wiretapped Trump Tower. But then Roger Stone went equally nuts and began attacking pretty much every woman he could think of.”
“Roger Stone has blocked Palmer Report on Twitter (and he yells “Fake News” at us every time we publish real news about him), but that didn’t stop us from observing his meltdown tonight. Stone inappropriately called CNN commentator Ana Navarro “fat” and “stupid.” and made allegations about her sex life Stone then turned his ire on respected liberal political pundit Caroline Orr, whom he called a ” stupid ignorant ugly bitch.” Stone also insulted conservative political pundit Louise Mensch in sexist fashion. If Stone deletes these tweets, the above links will break, but we have screen captures of all of the tweets in question.”
All this seems to suggest things are getting kind of hot for Stone. David Frum may think he’s an unimportant footnote but the FBI is investigating Stone.
