Guess Who Won’t be at the March 20 Congressional Russia Hearings?
It’s certainly a very good and important step that there we will have public hearings in the House on March 20-exactly 2 months after Trump’s inauguration.
“Those being asked to testify March 20 include former CIA Director John Brennan, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and former acting Attorney General Sally Yates, who was fired by President Donald Trump in January after refusing to defend his travel ban executive order in court. FBI Director James Comey and NSA Director Mike Rogers were also asked to testify”.
James Comey will be there. Comey says he intends to serve out his 10 year term.
Good for him. Do we intend for him to do so, remains the question. What we intend is that he answer a lot of questions in front of Congress. He has a lot to answer for.
Ok, so there’s the good news regarding the March 20 hearings. Here’s the cold water. The House Committee running the hearings is run by Devin Nunes, a Trump transition official. In the Senate the Russia-Trump probe is being run by Richard Burr-a Trump transition official.
Jeff Sessions-a major Trump campaign official-has recused himself but his replacement also ultimately answers to Trump.
And guess who won’t be at these March 20 hearings? Would you believe Christopher Steele?
At least we know Steele is ok now.
“I’m really pleased to be back here working again at the Orbis’s offices in London today,” Steele said Tuesday. “I’m now going to be focusing my efforts on supporting the broader interests of our company here. I’d like to say a warm thank you to everyone who sent me kind messages and support over the last few weeks.”
“Just to add, I won’t be making any further statements or comments at this time,” Steele added.
It’s important for us to remember that Steele Dossier has held up very well despite early attempts to slur it. The leap was made from ‘unproven’ to ‘disproven.’ The real news at the time was it wasn’t disproven.
The sensationalistic story about Trump. Russian hookers, and some golden showers was amplified. But this ignored the really important aspects of the dossier: it claimed that the Trump campaign did coordinate with Russia’s interference.
That is the most shocking and damning thing this investigation can find.
One name in the SD was: Mikhail Kalugin. He was being investigated by the FBI and forced to go back to Russia.
“A Russian diplomat who worked in the Washington embassy left the country last August while federal investigators examined whether he played a key covert role in the alleged Kremlin-directed plot to influence last fall’s U.S. elections.”
“Two people with knowledge of a multi-agency investigation into the Kremlin’s meddling have told McClatchy that Mikhail Kalugin was under scrutiny when he departed. He has been an important figure in the inquiry into how Russia bankrolled the email hacking of top Democrats and took other measures to defeat Hillary Clinton and help Donald Trump capture the White House, said the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the investigation.”
“Kalugin’s name – albeit misspelled ‑ first surfaced publicly in January in a former British spy’s jarring but largely uncorroborated dossier of intelligence collected for Trump’s U.S. political opponents. The 35 pages of opposition research quoted Russian sources claiming that Trump campaign associates had colluded with the Kremlin, including in the public release of Democrats’ emails that proved embarrassing to Clinton at a time when polls found her leading Trump.”
“Kalugin was “withdrawn from Washington at short notice because Moscow feared his heavy involvement in the US presidential election operation . . . would be exposed in the media,” the former British MI6 officer Christopher Steele reported. “ . . . His replacement, Andrei Bondarev however was clean.”
Yet Steele will not be at these hearings.
