Don’t Forget: James Comey is Also Being Investigated
When you look at Watergate 2.0, it’s even worse than the first one in that the first one didn’t involve a hostile foreign power. Of course, in 1968, Nixon did consult a hostile foreign power; he killed LBJ’s peace talks in Vietnam by telling South Vietnam they’d get a better deal with him as POTUS.
But for now, when you talk about Watergate 2.0, the focus has been almost completely just on the Russiagate piece of it. The Comeygate piece-the letter on October 28 has been discussed far less. While there are investigations into Russiagate, Comeygate has no investigations yet.
Or does it?
Actually, the DOJ inspector general before Obama stepped down opened a case.
“The Justice Department inspector general will review broad allegations of misconduct involving FBI Director James B. Comey and how he handled the probe of Hillary Clinton’s email practices, the inspector general announced Thursday.”
“The investigation will be wide-ranging, encompassing Comey’s various letters and public statements on the matter and whether FBI or other Justice Department employees leaked nonpublic information, according to Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz.”
This investigation by Michael E. Horowitz has been almost entirely undiscussed since Trump came in. But never forget-Comey himself is under investigation.
However, the missing piece is a public investigation of Comey’s handling of the email probe. There must be public hearings.
A couple of complications though:
1. Such a public investigation won’t happen unless the Dems take the House in 2018.
2. The Dems paradoxically sort of need Comey for now to run the Russia investigation. Obviously the last thing we want is for Trump to choose a new FBI director.
There’s a kind of uneasy relationship between Comey and the Dems. He knows Dems are peeved at him. Maybe he hopes to mollify them by having a real and vigilant investigation of Trump-Russia. But the Dems need him in there for now.
So it’s sort of complicated. But we still need to know exactly what happened in Comeygate. Why did he write that letter when it’s against all protocols and precedents in his own agency?
A few theories:
1. He’s a partisan Republican. People forget this now, but he’s a Whitewater alum who came up with Ken Starr. He’s been investigating the Clintons for 25 years. Everybody remembers the time Comey defied George W. Bush. It’s undoubtedly how he came to be chosen by Obama in the first place.
But he has been investigating the Clintons for 25 years. Maybe he couldn’t resist when he saw he finally caught his white whale.
2. While there may be something to 1, it seems pretty clear that Comey’s hand was in some way forced. That left to his own devices, whatever his partisan preferences, would not have released that letter.
And this brings us back to Roger Stone who seems to know a lot about it. Stone is a big player in the Russiagate piece of Watergate 2.0 as well. His communications with both Guccifer 2.0 and Wikileaks.
But his fingerprints are also all over the Comey letter. Here is Stone in an interview at The Intercept:
“Comey had no choice. The NYPD had and has a copy of the 650,000 emails. Comey’s statement, days before the election, that there’s nothing in there, is a bald-faced lie. This is just supposition, but I think the FBI director looked at the content and said they’re going to hang me if I don’t do something.”
Comey had no choice. Stone sure seems to know a lot about it. So he needs to be questioned with regard to Comeygate too.
P.S. We won’t have this investigation until the Dems take back the House. As I’ve discussed recently, I’m looking into a run against Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). I took a poll that was very interesting. It showed that after comparing my own positions with King’s on a number of issues, I only trail him by 11 points.
Again, this is me now as an unknown. I’m working on getting known. I met with Duwayne Gregory who ran against King in 2016 and spoke with the Suffolk Dems. They are now looking at my blog and I will meet with the chairman soon.
In other words, I’m doing my bit to try to get us a House majority, King has won 13 straight House elections so as Trump puts it ‘What do you have to lose?’ Dems might as well try something different.

There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will
