Trump Continues to be Subject to the World’s Longest Audit
I’ll have to get back to you on that. That’s the best Sean Spicer can do.
“White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer attempted to deflect questions about Mr Trump’s returns at a press conference on Monday, repeatedly stating that Mr Trump is under audit by the IRS and thus cannot release his returns. The IRS has confirmed that individuals under audit are permitted to release their returns.”
“The issue of Mr Trump’s tax returns – a frequent point of contention on the campaign trail – resurfaced this week on the eve of Tax Day. As US citizens prepared to file their taxes on 18 April, hundreds marched to demand that the president release his own.”
So let’s have the letter that announced the audit. How long has this one audit gone on for? What about the years prior to the audit? Of course, being under audit is not a reason not to release them anyway.
It’s pretty clear Trump will never release them, at least voluntarily. But the issue continues to fire up the Dem base as shown again with the huge tax marches across the country.
And it gives Democratic challengers a great issue to flag GOP incumbents with. Some Republicans at the town halls have cracked under the pressure and said they now agree Trump should release his returns.
But will the proof is in the pudding-will they vote for bills that direct Trump to release his tax returns?
I doubt it. And this gives Democrats a great issue to flag GOP incumbents with. In my poll of Peter King in NY-2, one takeaway is that this is a potent issue. After hearing that King opposes bills that compel Trump to release his tax returns, 47% of poll respondents were more likely to vote for me as opposed to just 26% for Peter King.
It’s easy money. All challengers should just hit them on Trump’s taxes, his hiding the WH visitor logs, etc. In King’s case he can be hit on not holding town halls-he dismisses them as ‘screaming matches.’
P.S. As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
