Is Jason Chaffetz Under FBI Investigation for Campaign Finance Fraud?
Jason in the House is leaving the House and it’s not that I’m not grateful. To the contrary, it’s very nice to see the Lee Harvey Oswald of American Democracy stepping down.
“Still, the abruptness is head spinning. He clearly had planned to stay on as long as he ran the House Oversight Committee which was until 2021. Salon-which is Bernie Sanders country, they actually were the ones to start Bernie or Bust-are certain there’s noting to see here. They really don’t care about Russian collusion or the Comey letter as it mitigates from their theory-Hillary lost because she’s a terrible candidate.”
“Trump getting elected was the worst possible thing for him,” says one Utah political insider. “Under a Hillary Clinton presidency, he would have had a nightly gig on Fox News. It would have been Crooked Hillary every night. Instead he got Trump.”
“Being in charge of investigating allegations of government impropriety against the famously vindictive Trump is bad enough. Add to that fact that 97 percent of Republicans in a recent survey still support him and that alone could account for Chaffetz’s desire to get out.”
“The self-aggrandizing congressman might also have gotten tired of the humble image he’s created for himself by refusing to rent or purchase a house in the D.C. area. Instead, he sleeps in his office.”
“I’m turning 50 and I’m sleeping on a cot,” he told the Deseret News. “Maybe it’s time to reevaluate my life.”
“Other legit theories are that Chaffetz is getting ready to run for Utah governor in 2020 or Utah senator in 2018, although he has denied such claims. He has, however, registered web domains in the event that he chooses to do so.”
“But the abruptness of Chaffetz’s withdrawal has also generated some alternative and unbelievable explanations. Louise Mensch, a former Conservative British member of Parliament who has somehow transformed herself into a hero for anti-Trump conspiracy theorists, has been testing out various allegations against Chaffetz on Twitter.”
“He’s certainly been on her mind for quite some time.”
So as usual, Salon is certain there’s nothing to see here. Their take is to accept Chaffetz’ cover story at face value-though they do say that it’s kind of turnabout for Chaffetz to be the victim of conspiracy theories.
But it’s not just the abruptness of his withdrawal but that he wants to withdraw overnight. Why does he have to step down this quickly? It certainly makes it plausible that there’s some kind of ticking time bomb he’s trying to outrun.
Again, if he’s mostly thinking of running for Governor in 2020 with this move then why wouldn’t he at least serve out his term?
If he’s not happy with Trump being in the WH-as the fun of pursuing Hillary is gone-it’s ironic as his leaking of the Comey letter was the MVP play that won it for Trump.
The Palmer Report:
“Now that Jason Chaffetz has announced he won’t seek reelection to Congress and has revealed that he may resign early to take a job in the private sector (link), it’s given credence to last week’s report that Russia has been blackmailing Chaffetz and the FBI knows about it. That’s also bolstered by last night’s report that a former Chaffetz staffer has confirmed the FBI investigation. But now comes another report which – if true – helps explain much of what took place during the 2016 presidential election.”
“The latest report comes from Lisa Garner from the site Reason and Justice, who claims that the Jason Chaffetz campaign “took $10mil donation from Trump the same day he leaked Comey letter” (link), a claim which Daily Kos is presenting as plausible (link). This may initially sound absurd, and we can’t yet find the claim corroborated elsewhere, but it does fit with some of the other details coming from more proven sources. For instance the former Chaffetz staffer asserts that the FBI is investigating him for “campaign finance fraud” (link). And last week’s report asserted that the “fraud” in question involved Russia (link). Put those together and you have Chaffetz being busted by the FBI for illegally taking Russian money.”
“It would also explain why Jason Chaffetz took the risk of leaking James Comey’s letter about Hillary Clinton’s emails on October 28th, a plainly improper move that’s subsequently made him the subject of various ethics inquiries. Chaffetz had been hemming and hawing in his support of Donald Trump all along, and his decision to leak the letter before the election always seemed suspicious. As the chair of the House Oversight Committee, it would seemingly have been more advantageous for Chaffetz to sit on the letter until the day after the election, then use it as an excuse to resume his years of investigations into President Hillary Clinton. But if he had $10 million waving in his face, it’s a different story.”
There are certainly a number of ifs here-three huge charges. As for Chaffetz releasing the Comey letter, it’s arguable that his partisan Hillary hatred is enough. On the other hand there is a good source that Chaffetz is under FBI investigation for campaign finance fraud-the alleged $10 million from Trump would certainly fit the bill.
“Six days ago we brought you the story of an intel community source asserting that Russia had blackmail material on Jason Chaffetz and that the FBI knew about it (link). But now comes a corroborating report from Dave Bernstein, an online political pundit whose sources have a history of being proven correct. Here’s what Bernstein has shared:”
“According to a former Jason Chaffetz staffer, Chaffetz is also the subject of an ongoing investigation for campaign finance fraud. A friend of Chaffetz at FBI told him the investigation could not be kept quiet for much longer, that Intel committee would soon find info on him. Benghazi has Russian ties too, but Chaffetz’s staffer could not verify the connection. Some of his current staffers may be implicated. Per the former Chaffetz staffer, this is one of the reasons they resigned. The former staffer also says Chaffetz’s staff is in panic mode.”
Listen, we’re living in the wrong time for people who dismiss ‘conspiracy theories’ and tell us we should just take everything at face value and except the cover story. Bernie Bros want this because they don’t want it know that Hillary was ripped off-then their ‘bad candidate’ theory of the world evaporates.
How much has already happened could have been imaginable even 2 years ago? We’re now living in Alice in Wonderland’s Looking Glass.
In any case, while time will tell exactly what’s happening with Chaffetz, I find that idea that he’s just leaving to be close to his family or run in 2020 not very plausible. It’s been interesting how hard he’s been hugging his wife lately-like she’s a human shield.
“Jason Chaffetz is so ambitious that his last name is a verb.”
“In the political world, to Chaffetz means to throw a former mentor under the bus in order to get ahead, and various prominent Republicans, from former Utah governor and presidential candidate Jon Huntsman Jr. to House Majority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy, have experienced what it’s like to get Chaffetzed. But the five-term Utah Republican and powerful chairman of the House oversight committee shocked Washington on Wednesday when he announced he would not seek reelection in 2018 or run for any other political office that year in order to spend more time with his family.”
This is why it’s not plausible he just wants to go home with his wife and kids-his kids have now left for college anyway. He doesn’t strike me as a guy who just wants to sit home with his wife for the last 30-40 years of his life with all the power and perks he has.
We can speculate but what’ snot plausible is taking his cover story at face value a la the Hilary haters at Salon.
P.S. As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
