Despite Art of the Deal, Trump Has Lost Most Congressional Fights in History
This is a great line, but I must give credit to David Jolly, the former Florida Republican Congressman who used it last night on Lawrence O’Donnell.
Meanwhile, the Jimmy Carter Library folks are having too much fun regarding the First 100 days.

Trump, of course, says he doesn’t care about the 100 days, that it’s artificial. Of course, that’s a baldfaced lie. It kills him that he has nothing to brag about.
Yes the first 100 days is an artificial measure-which is why Trump of all people wants something to highlight it. He’s all about artificial measures. But he’s got nothing to brag about.
Indeed, SNL nailed him here. Alec Baldwin Trump demanded his aide come up with all those Trump First 100 day achievements and it was ‘A lot of stuff. Appointed Neil Gorsuch.’ Then they shut the book.
And then life imitated art: a few days later Trump said ‘I have a lot of achievements like appointing Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.’
Indeed, while publicly claiming he doesn’t care about the 100 days, he’s privately been driving his aides ragged to get something under the finish line. At this point, the best odds are nuclear war with North Korea. That looks like it could happen in the next four days.
It’s gotten so bad he was talking about playing chicken with a government shutdown in exchange for wall funding.
Now he’s thinking twice:
“President Donald Trump signaled Monday he would be comfortable delaying a fight over a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border until September, possibly averting a government shutdown looming around his 100th day in office.”
“Speaking to conservative news outlets during a reception at the White House, Trump did not give up on his plan to get Congress to fund the wall, a key promise of his 2016 campaign. But he said he would accept a delay of that fight until the fall, conservative reporters who were present said on Twitter.”
“A White House official confirmed the comments.”
“It was likely welcome news to Capitol Hill Republicans hoping to avoid a shutdown. Democrats had refused to vote for spending legislation to keep the government open past the end of the week if it included funding for a wall.”
This is smart unless Trump thinks the way to raise his dismal poll numbers is to shutdown the government by trying to force funding a wall he said Mexico would pay for and which doesn’t have public support.
As Joy Reid said-on the same Lawrence O’Donnell clip-so far Nancy Pelosi may as well take a vacation with President Obama. She-or Chuck Schumer-haven’t had to do anything. Nothing Trump tries to do even makes it to the floor of the GOP House.
Regarding the whole issue of a border wall, the big story is that people who actually live by the border think it’s a pretty terrible idea.
Betsey Woodruff of the Daily Beast made a great point on Chris Hayes last night: despite the crackdown in border security since 9/11 it’s just as easy as ever to transfer meth over the border.
So a bad idea that Trump said Mexico would pay for is actually a bad idea that he wants us to pay for and was talking about shutting down the government to make us pay for it in a bid to claim his first 100 days were a success.
The Art of the Deal. Then again, Trump didn’t actually write it and his ghostwriter. Tony Schwartz, has spent 25 years atoning for.
P.S. As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
