How Much Money Has Trump Made Since He’s Been in Office So Far?
This goes back to the day after the election. He immediately doubled prices at Margo Lago. So every time someone gets a new membership we pay Trump a 100% increase.
In my earlier piece I looked at the weird double standard where only Center Left liberals are barred from making money at any point in their lives to show they’re not hypocrites.
Which is a backwards way of looking at it. As Obama always said, it’s liberals who are not hypocrites-they are willing to pay higher tax rates because they believe it’s in the public interest.
“With all the furor over what Obama has made since he left office maybe we can spend some time on what Trump is making while he’s in office. As noted in the above post, Yglesias basically tells liberals that’s the breaks-they will always be judged harsher than conservatives, that’s the way it goes. Just accept it and play within these rules.”
“Populist nationalists, for better or for worse, are held to a lower standard in this regard precisely because they are committed to a zero-sum politics. As Princeton University’s Jan-Werner Müller writes in his excellent short book on populist authoritarianism, “[T}he perception among supporters of populists is that corruption and cronyism are not genuine problems as long as they look like measures pursued for the sake of a moral, hardworking ‘us’ and not for the immoral or even foreign ‘them.’”
This certainly works pretty well for conservatives. They can make all the money they want and use it to fund their campaigns against liberals who must take a personal vow of charity and can only accept small donations.
Trump truly had it the best of all worlds in 2016. He accused Hillary again and again of being ‘crooked’ and self dealing while in the same breath boasting that as President he’d be the first one to make money in the deal.
Trump’s alleged business prowess was supposed to be his selling point. That he was-allegedly-a billionaire was treated as a feature not a bug. Talk about having it both ways. Yglesias’s response is: those are the rules and liberals can’t change them.
Meanwhile, Trump, desperate for a win within the 100 days he claims is a phony standard, is trying to drive the narrative today about his big tax plan. Steve Mnuchin-another Trump billionaire from Wall St; a relief to know he’s not a hypocrite-he’s rich and favors policies that benefit himself-is calling Trump’s tax plan ‘the biggest tax cut in history.’
It is for the rich. It’s sort of the failed Sam Brownback Kansas plan at the national level. He wants to cut corporate tax cuts to 15%. After all Europe has a 15% tax rate. They do and they also have dismal growth.
But before we see any tax plan for tax reform plan-if it explodes the deficit then it’s not tax reform-we need to see his tax returns and also see how much he’s made since he’s been in office.
Even though it’s questionable that he was a billionaire prior to being President, you suspect that may have changed now. Someone ought to ask David Cay Johnston.
There are so many pieces it’s hard to say. But you have the $100,000 he gets from the American people for every new membership at Mar-a-Lago. Then there is all the money that costs:
“President Donald Trump will return to his lavish Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla., yet again this weekend. It will be his fifth visit to the resort during the short period he’s taken over at the White House.”
“Trump’s past trips to Palm Beach have been nothing short of eventful, with a national security crisis occurring in front of high-paying Mar-a-Lago members during dinner, frequent golf outings at his private golf club, and surprise appearances at charity events hosted by Mar-a-Lago .”
“But that’s only part of the price of Trump’s weekend getaways. Residents in Palm Beach have been hit with additional costs to protect the president, to the tune of more than $1 million since Trump was elected.”
Indeed, Trump’s family run WH looks like one of the most corrupt nations in the world:
“Trump’s White House Family Affair Looks A Lot Like The Most Corrupt Nations In The World.”
“Presidential advisers Ivanka Trump and husband Jared Kushner are still connected to their own businesses.”
Ok. But what really matters is Obama got paid for a speech. Got to have your priorities.
P.S. As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
