Jason Chaffetz Has Already ‘Taken His Foot off the Gas Pedal’
Sorry, but that Chaffetz totally set up a pun with his choice of words and further mysterious actions. Just five days after he announced he’s not running again-and may not even serve out his term-now he suddenly has to take a leave ASAP for foot surgery.
Ok, but this just makes the pun perfect.
“House Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz announced Wednesday that he will take a leave of absence from Congress to undergo surgery on his foot, with an estimated return in mid-May.”
“The Utah Republican posted a picture of an X-ray on Instagram and wrote that a foot injury he sustained 12 years ago is now prompting him to undergo “immediate” surgery.”
“The estimated recovery time is three to four weeks. Chaffetz said avoiding the procedure could put him “at risk for serious infection.”
“Chaffetz told POLITICO he plans to fly back to his home state early on Thursday. He said he expects to resume his place in Congress and his panel chairmanship in three weeks, likely after the May recess.”
Chaffetz announced last week that he would not be seeking reelection to his House seat in 2018.”
“After long consultation with my family and prayerful consideration, I have decided I will not be a candidate for any office in 2018,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
“Chaffetz said later in the week he has not ruled out the possibility that he might vacate his seat prior to the end of his current term.”
“In the meantime, I still have a job to do and I have no plans to take my foot off the gas,” Chaffetz said.
Did you see that? He said he wasn’t going to take his foot off the gas. His foot. Now he’s…
As Palmer Report says, he is protesting a bit much: who under normal circumstances would feel the need to offer empirical proof that his foot really needs surgery?
“Jason Chaffetz announced last night on his Instagram account that he’s taking a leave of absence from Congress for three to four weeks in order to have foot surgery. I wrote at the time that, considering the circumstances, this is probably a mere excuse to step away from Congress just as his committee seriously dives into the Trump-Russia investigation. Some have pointed out that Chaffetz posted an x-ray of his own foot, proving how bad of shape it’s in. But that’s the whole point.”
“Last night I stipulated that Jason Chaffetz surely has a foot problem. But by his own admission, this is a foot problem he’s been living with for twelve years (link). And suddenly he needs immediate corrective surgery, one day after his House Oversight Committee’s Trump-Russia probe got serious? Five days after he mysteriously announced he won’t be running for reelection and that he’s seeking an immediate job in the private sector? Twelve days after intel community sources began buzzing that Chaffetz had taken Russian money in relation to the Trump scandal, and the FBI was onto him? (link) After all that, now he needs immediate surgery on his twelve year old foot problem?”
“Under normal circumstances, Chaffetz (or any other member of Congress) could simply announce that he’s having foot surgery, everyone would automatically believe it. No explanation or evidence of a foot problem would be required. But the fact that Chaffetz is posting an x-ray of his foot (Instagram) in order to prove that he has a foot problem? It feels like he’s protesting too much.”
It certainly does. Normally, you wouldn’t feel you had to prove you really need surgery. So here’s the next question: is he really coming back in three to four weeks? Or are plans going to again mysteriously change for Jason in the House who’s now leaving the House and can’t seem to wait to leave the House?
The sequence of events are certainly interesting:
“Consider the sequence of events here. Twelve days ago, intelligence community sources began asserting that the FBI was looking into Jason Chaffetz being blackmailed by Russia (link). Then suddenly, five days ago, Chaffetz announced out of nowhere that he won’t be running for reelection, even though he’s just three months into his current term. He also said he’s seeking private sector jobs, and that he may not finish his current term. Then, immediately after his announcement, one of his own former staffers asserted that Chaffetz illegally took Russian money and that the FBI caught him (link).”
“Then yesterday, when Congress was back in session for the first time since any of the above events, Jason Chaffetz was suddenly using his chairmanship of the House Oversight Committee to go hard after Michael Flynn in a manner which made Donald Trump’s White House look like it’s trying to cover up the Russia scandal. And now today, after Chaffetz spent just one day actively investigating Trump-Russia, suddenly he’s taking a prolonged leave from Congress to address an old issue with his foot – even though he just got done saying that he had no health issues when he announced that he won’t seek reelection.”
No health issues. Was he just pulling our legs?
P.S. As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
