Michael Steele: GOP Has Wasted 7 Years on Obamacare Repeal
After all the storm and stress and the relentless Fatwah against all things Obamacare, they can’t repeal it. Don’t have the votes.
Some media pundits yesterday were claiming that the GOP ‘feels itself closer to passing it now than before’-a fairly vague feeling. But when you stripped it away, these same pundits admitted it can’t pass the Senate, no way.
Trump just wants a ‘win.’ So winning is now described as passing Obamacare repeal in the House and then seeing it fail in the Senate? As a Democrat I’m not tired of losing yet.
Of course, if you’re a GOP House moderate this is the worst of all worlds: you get to vote for a very unpopular bill that won’t pass in the Senate anyway. So it’s lose-lose. This is what a ‘win’ means for Donald Trump.
Maybe the media should have had him explain this during the campaign. But there wasn’t time-‘What about your emails, Secretary Clinton?’
But Trump just wants a ‘win’ so he’s forcing the GOP to do this again. It’s not going any better.
“House Republicans floundering on Obamacare repeal.”
“Nearly 20 Republicans have announced their opposition, leaving virtually no room for error.”
Sure. That’s a great road to victory-keep repeating the same thing that fails again and again.
“House Republicans and the White House kicked off the week thinking they’d finally pass their Obamacare repeal bill. But by Tuesday morning, worry had once again gripped the House GOP leadership, as Speaker Paul Ryan and his team floundered in their bid to land the votes.”
“Nearly 20 GOP lawmakers, mostly moderate or centrist Republicans, have now added their names to the “no” column. The most recent, longtime Donald Trump supporter Rep. Billy Long (R-Mo.), even rebuffed the president’s personal plea to back the bill in a phone call Monday afternoon.”
“At the same time, the list of Republicans who say they’re “undecided” has grown to at least two-dozen. Even several GOP whips tasked with drumming up support for the bill said Monday night they have not yet made up their minds on whether to support the revised American Health Care Act.”
Did you get that? The GOP whips-the ones who are supposed to be drumming up support for Trumpcare themselves have not decided yet. So how do you twist someone’s arm to support something you yourself are not sure you support?
It's astonishing that Trumpcare was at 17%, failed, and then was revised by… weakening its most popular feature. https://t.co/s1PO0uGo4R

Well, that’s why they’ve now lost moderates. They seem not to get that the better the bill is for conservatives, the worse it gets for moderates.
“Navigating Trump’s America: The collapse of Trumpcare is happening all over again.”
“It’s happening, again. Despite the push from the White House and staunch conservatives to kill the Affordable Care Act, dozens of Republicans in the House are signaling they don’t want their dose of Trumpcare.”
Of course, as much as Trump hates not getting a win, the only thing worse for his weak poll numbers would be for it to pass. Imagine if there were 14 million Americans who just lost their Medicare? But Trump doesn’t get this. Why would a GOP Congressman put his name on this just to have to explain an unpopular vote that will fail in the Senate anyway?
4/ …and that was coverage for pre-existing conditions. It didn't matter where you were coming from on the battle…it was the killer app.

8/ Members vote for a bill that the Senate will NEVER pass. A Senate source tells me they now have MAYBE 25 Rs (and shrinking).

So you have GOP whips trying to whip support for a bill that has maybe 25 Senate GOPers and that they themselves haven’t committed to support.
The trouble is Trump’s utter ignorance of policy and his belief that his ability to tell true lies will Trump everything. He truly believes that having a ‘win’ no matter what the details is all that matters.
Truly living in a dreamworld.
P.S. As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
