Comeygate: No Huma Abedin Didn’t Forward ‘Hundreds and Thousands’ of Clinton’s Emails to Anthony Weiner’s Computer
James Comey was desperate to defend his indefensible actions during the 2016 election-particularly both the July presser and his October 28 letter that as Nate Silver says, likely cost Hillary the election.
7. I argued here that I'm a "small Comey" guy. I think the effect was more like 1-2 points than 3-4 points… https://t.co/6M6EdUgTRF

His rationalizations were not terribly compelling, it’s true. Would you speak or conceal?
Well he concealed Trump and Russia for eight months before speaking without tears. How about just follow the protocols and precedents of your agency which clearly dictate that you don’t say anything 11 days before an election no matter what is found. An important point that Mathew Miller from the Obama DOJ has made is that it’s not even relevant if you know for a fact a candidate will be indicted 11 days before an election. You’re still supposed to stay silent-what Comey frames pejoratively as ‘conceal.’
What any reasonable person in his position should do then, it not even open to question. You keep your mouth shut. There is nothing in the rules about ‘an exceptional circumstance.’ It’s also not clear why he thinks that swinging an election is only bad but not swinging it is catastrophic.’
In Comey’s desperation to defend the indefensible, he then threw out a new stink bomb against the Clintons. He claimed-and this was brand new; we never heard anything about at the time of the Comey letter-that Huma Abedin would forward classified emails from Hillary Clinton to Anthony Weiner’s laptop and he’d print them out for her.
The point of this sudden revelation was to impress us that at that moment an indictment of Hillary really was back on the table. Indeed, Ted Cruz referred to this claim yesterday-during the Russia interference hearings. What? You’d expect Cruz or Chuck Grassley to ask questions about Russian interference in a hearing about Russian interference?
So Comey’s attempt at justification was pretty weak. And now it turns out that he not only didn’t help himself but damaged his own cause greatly. It turns out that what he said about Abedin forwarding classified Clinton emails to Weiner’s laptop is not true.
For the record, I’d been highly skeptical of that claim from the start. What we had been told at the time was that her emails had ended up on Weiner’s laptop but that no one knew how. Abedin herself didn’t understand it.
So what Comey had asserted last week was a complete change in what we had been told previously. It sounded pretty funky. Now we know for a fact what Comey said was completely false. Wow.
“FBI Director James Comey was wrong about the crux of his “investigation” into Hillary Clinton’s email server: Huma Abedin didn’t forward “hundreds and thousands” of Clinton’s emails to Anthony Weiner’s computer, ProPublica found. And now the FBI is scrambling to figure out what to do.”
What Comey got wrong:
- Abedin forwarded only a handful of Clinton’s emails to Weiner’s computer — not “hundreds and thousands.”
- She did not make “a regular practice” of forwarding these emails, despite Comey’s claims.
- It is believed the emails ended up on Weiner’s computer when Abedin backed up her Blackberry, per officials who spoke with ProPublica.
What’s next: The FBI was reportedly going to send a letter to Congress on Monday updating them on Comey’s mistake, but that didn’t happen. Now the bureau is trying to figure out what to do with this information moving forward.”
How could he have gotten this so wrong? If you’ll allow me to speculate for a moment-I suspect he knowingly lied. Which is perjury even for an FBI Director. I think he told that whopper to justify that letter. HIs justification was lurid-but besides the point. Again, even if he had proof positive knowledge she would be indicted on October 28, he was not supposed to reveal this publicly. And he had some pretty incriminating information about Trump too at the time and managed to keep quiet about it.
So Comey made a gross misstatement. The FBi was supposed to update Congress. But they didn’t for some reason. I’ve said it before-we must also have a Comey investigation.
I notice that a number of my fellow Democrats on Twitter seem to be giving Comey a pass-maybe they’ve internalized Louise Mensch’s very elevated view of Comey. And I agree we need Comey to run the Russia probe-as anyone Trump replaced him with would be a total political hack like Chuck Grassley in the hearings yesterday.
But that doesn’t change the fact that the Democrats must investigate the entire email probe if they take over in 2019.
As I’ve recently told you, I’m hoping to be in that new Democratic House sworn in January, 2019.

P.S. As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
