As Critical as I’ve Been of Comey the Shabby Way Trump Fired Him Was Criminal
Word has come that Comey is furious at the way he was canned-by Trump’s bodyguard who was already in trouble for manhandling Latino reporters at Trump rallies last year.
As critical of I've been of Comey that was criminally disrespectful

“Former FBI Director James Comey was furious at the lack of respect the White House showed him in the way he was fired, sources have told ABC News.”
“Associates say he is simmering at some of the comments directed at him by White House staffers, who have used words like “atrocities” to describe his actions as director.”
“One person close to the former director said that President Trump calling Comey a “showboat” and suggesting he is not “competent” has required Comey to show considerable restraint.”
“Look, he’s a showboat. He’s a grandstander,” Trump said about Comey in an interview with NBC’s Lester Holt on Thursday. “The FBI has been in turmoil. You know that. I know that. Everybody knows that.”
“A source said they expect that at some point Comey will respond to Trump — but it is uncertain when that would be. For now, Comey has taken a few days to gather himself, particularly given how caught off guard he was by the timing of the firing.”
“The only public statement from Comey since his dismissal came in the form of a letter he delivered to former FBI colleagues on Wednesday.”
“Sources say that inside the FBI, many agents feel Comey has been treated shabbily. While there are those who disagreed with some of his tactics, he was nonetheless broadly popular in the bureau and respected.”
If you needed more proof Trump is not the political genius he says he is, what he did to Comey should be proof of it. As the Nixon Library pointed out on Twitter(!) Nixon never fired the FBI Director. He wasn’t that clueless. He understood the terrible optics and that the last thing you want to do is make an enemy of the FBI.
J. Edgar Hoover lasted 45 years because he knew where all the bodies were buried-no POTUS could risk that. It’s no coincidence that we’ve gotten so much new information in the short time since Comey’s shabby firing.
Trump apologists can’t seem to get why Dems are not overjoyed that Trump fired Comey despite our own anger at how Comey handled the email probe. They keep trying to argue that Dems are being hypocritical. Sure the Lock Her Up crowd is now outraged over how Comey treated Hillary Clinton and we’re the hypocrites.
“Trump thought the Dems would be elated by his firing of Comey, because many Democrats had called for the same—outraged by the FBI director’s treatment of Hillary in the final stages of the campaign. What Trump didn’t understand is that certain things just aren’t done. And one of those taboos is firing the head of the FBI because you are angry that he is investigating links between the Russian government and some of your top campaign officials. I see this same flaw in many commenters; they underestimate the importance of process, and focus entirely on content. Comey may have deserved being fired (I have no opinion), but it is not acceptable to fire a top law enforcement official because that person is investigating your administration.”
“It’s just not done.”
Thank you. That’s just it-process matters. Something that Trump is incapable of grasping.
For the record, those who read me know no one has been more critical of Comey than I have.
Still, I never argued that Comey should be fired-at least not right now, not yet. Possibly in the future but only after a lengthy, comprehensive investigation that would likely last many months first. And if he were fired, Trump is certainly not the one to do it as he’s being investigated by him.
What I had argued for was that there be a Congressional investigation into the entire email probe and Comey-along with the rest of the agency’s handling of it. This would run parallel to the current investigation of the email probe being done by the DOJ’s IG office. It would be the public component.
It would investigate Comey’s conduct but other agents involved would also need to be heard from as would the alleged ‘rogue agents’ who forced Comey’s hand into writing the Comey letter.
Roger Stone seems to know a lot about who these ‘rogue agents’ are.
Comey had no choice. The NYPD had and has a copy of the 650,000 emails. Comey’s statement, days before the election, that there’s nothing in there, is a bald-faced lie. This is just supposition, but I think the FBI director looked at the content and said they’re going to hang me if I don’t do something.”
At the end of what would be a pretty lengthy investigation that my guess could easily take a year or longer, then the Congressional Committee-preferably a Select Committee would opine on what consequences there could be for Comey, other agents, and the agency as a whole as well as the rogue agents who apparently are in the NY FBI and NYPD.
But what Trump did here is literally cross the third rail of politics. You don’t declare war on the FBI. They took down Nixon and he never went this far-he fired the Special Prosecutor-which was bad enough and just as wrong-but not the FBI Director.
Trump is not a political genius. He has the worst political instincts imaginable. If he were smart he should whenever he gets a thought, do the opposite.
Can’t wait for Comey to testify before Congress.
P.S. As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
