Did Trump Just Reveal the Trump Tapes?
Wow. There are Trump apologists who try to pretend comparing Trump to Nixon and Watergate is ‘hyperbole.’ Despite the many comparisons. Then you get a piece like this in the Washington Post yesterday that argues it’s impossible not to compare Trump Russia collusion to Watergate.
Who said this? Someone who might know-Phillip Allen Lacovara. Who is he?
Philip Allen Lacovara, a former U.S. deputy solicitor general in the Justice Department, served as counsel to Watergate special prosecutors Archibald Cox and Leon Jaworski.
Speaking of Watergate, there was a piece in Roll Call that argued there are likely Trump tapes just as there were Nixon tapes.

“During the Russia scandal that plagues the Trump presidency, there are also large numbers of recorded conversations that provide the equivalent of the Watergates tapes. I call them “Trump tapes”, which were legally recorded by counter-intelligence and law enforcement authorities for legitimate security and law enforcement purposes.”
“The eavesdropping that created these tapes was originally aimed against foreign individuals with interests that are are hostile to America, including Russian targets. The tapes would include every mention by foreign intelligence targets of every individual associated with Trump with whom they spoke.”
“To understand the potential political and legal time bombs that might be out there, consider the following: Every time we read a public name of a Russian individual who had some contact with anyone associated with Trump, from Russian government officials or shady characters with ties to Russian intelligence, there is an above-average probability that their conversations were recorded and emails were monitored.”
“When “Russian A” talked to “Russian B” about “Trump associate C”, if that conversation was recorded, it would reveal information about what Trump associate C was saying or doing.”
“Similarly, when Russian A (who was under surveillance) talked directly to Trump associate C (who was not), that conversation was recorded incidental to the eavesdropping on the Russian. If that conversation revealed that there was probable cause that the Trump associate was engaging in some form of wrongdoing, there could have been a warrant approved to eavesdrop on that Trump associate directly.”
In fact, this piece points out, there are likely two sets of Trump tapes: the American version and the Russian version.
Ok, so now fast forward this morning’s latest headline. Trump is outraged because Comey called out his lies to Lester Holt. Lies which make it worse for himself, we should add.
1. What Trump asserted about Comey puts him in a bad light as well as Comey if true. It would show both he and Comey acting improperly. Trump for asking Comey about his investigation of him and Comey for offering him reassurances over a social visit-dinner.
But Comey’s friends at the FBI have made it clear this was a lie. Dinner was Trump’s idea and Trump tried to push Comey for loyalty-and was rebuffed.
2. I for one believe Comey’s version of events not Trump’s. But either way, it was a huge boner by Trump as now this waives executive privilege for Trump’s conversations with Comey. Indeed, Comey will likely be asked by Congress about all of this. I suspect he’ll tell them willingly but if not he could be open to prosecution himself.
Anyway, that Lester Holt interview was an example of Trump jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire that he’s so good at.
But now Trump is piqued again by Comey’s public rebuff. Trump had already felt rebuffed by Comey’s Congressional appearance last week where he said he was ‘mildly nauseated at the thought’ that he could have swung the election. See-Comey himself admits there is a Comey effect.
And hearing Comey admit the Comey effect really got under Trump’s skin.
But when Trump is piqued he makes things worse. Bank on it. And as Brittany Spears would put it ‘Oops he did it again. He has now himself seemed to confirm that existence of Trump tapes that that Roll Call piece I cited asserted there are.
FOX NEWS: Dems being hysterical again, comparing Trump to Nixon
TRUMP: I taped my convos w/Comey & I'll release them if he doesn't shut up

President Trump suggested Friday that there may be “tapes” of his private conversations with FBI Director James B. Comey, whom he fired earlier this week, in an apparent attempt to threaten Comey about “leaking to the press.”
In his tweet, Trump appears to suggest that he may have recordings of his communications with Comey. It is unclear if such tapes exist, however.”
Trump’s tweet drew immediate comparisons to President Richard Nixon’s practice of taping his private conversations in the Oval Office. Presidential historian Michael Beschloss tweeted, “Presidents are supposed to have stopped routinely taping visitors without their knowledge when Nixon’s taping system was revealed in 1973.”
So again, Trump is actually making things worse. While the Post points out it’s not clear if they exist or not, Congress must now seriously look into the question.
Trump doesn’t seem to get that if there are Trump tapes this is a double edged sword that will also work against him. At least Nixon didn’t reveal the tapes himself-he didn’t think this revelation would help him.
Trump continues to doing things that make it 50 times worse for himself. In this vein, it’s worth remembering that Biff Loman in Back to the Future was based on: Donald Trump.
P.S. As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
