Treasury Financial Crimes Unit to Share Trump Info With the Senate Probe
This is something that Oregon Senator Ron Wyden has focused on like a laser beam.
That, and the ‘trail of dead Russians.’
Finally, we see some headway regarding the financial trail.
“A Treasury Department unit that specializes in combating money-laundering will share financial records with an expanding Senate probe into possible ties between Russia and President Donald Trump and his associates, according to people familiar with the matter.”
“The Senate Intelligence Committee requested the records from Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, or FinCEN, late last month, these people said. The people familiar with the matter didn’t specify the nature of those records. One person said that without them, though, the committee wouldn’t be able to reach a conclusion on whether there was collusion between Trump associates and Russia during last year’s campaign.”
As Rachel Maddow noted last night, that’s a fairly arresting and oblique gloss: without them, though, the committee wouldn’t be able to reach a conclusion on whether there was collusion between Trump associates and Russia during last year’s campaign.
“Sen. Ron Wyden (D., Ore.), a member of the intelligence committee and the ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, said in an interview Friday that he is particularly interested in information about shell companies, money laundering and the use of property transfers that may be germane to the committee’s Trump investigation.”
As noted yesterday the info by Trump’s legal team didn’t tell us too much as most money from Russia would be redirected through Cyrpus, etc.
By the way, the legal team won legal team of the year-in Russia.
Again, this is a plot Tom Clancy would reject as too farfetched.
As Senator Wyden says, a big key is debts Trump owes to Russia.
“Meanwhile, Vanity Fair has a piece on Trump’s coming war with the FBI-that he declared by the shabby way he treated Comey-the firing was bad enough, the disrespectful way greatly compounds it.”
“Another F.B.I. insider points out that while the media has focused on the investigation of possible collusion between Russia and Trump’s campaign, there are actually multiple inquiries in progress. “There’s also a cyber investigation, about the hacking and whether crimes were committed,” he says. “And then there’s the business side: Was there money laundering going on? Money from these Russian plutocrats that’s been washed through Trump’s real estate and businesses? That’s gotten overlooked, but Preet Bharara and the Southern District were supposedly looking into that.” They were until April anyway, when Trump and Sessions canned Bharara along with 45 other U.S. attorneys.
But the way that’s put confuses me. How is collusion defined? It seems to me it’s the cyber side where we have the clearest evidence of collusion via Roger Stone with Assange and Guccifer 2.0.
The good news is Preet Bharara’s replacement is continuing the fight.
“Donald Trump keeps firing people to try to make the investigation into his Russia scandal go away, and it just keeps finding a way to backfire. First it was Sally Yates, who came back to testify against him. Now it’s James Comey. Somewhere in there Trump fired Preet Bharara, the U.S. Attorney for Trump’s home district in New York. But now Bharara’s replacement, acting U.S. Attorney Joon Kim, is going hard after Russian money laundering as well.”
“The official Twitter account for the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York posted the following this evening: “Acting USAtty Kim: We will not allow the US financial system to be used to launder proceeds of crimes committed anywhere-here or in Russia” (link). Kim inherited the position on an acting basis by default when Donald Trump summarily fired Bhahara and dozens of other U.S. Attorney”
“It’s long been suspected that all of the firings were an attempt at cover for getting rid of Bharara, who was pursuing a number of cases in New York which were antithetical to Trump’s interests. But now that Trump has failed to bother installing anyone in Bharara’s place, it turns out one of his underlings is stepping up and going after Russian money laundering in his place. It’s suspected, though not substantiated, that the money Deutsche Bank has loaned to Trump is the same money that Deutsche Bank has admitted to have laundered from Russia into New York.”
“This comes nearly simultaneous to this evening’s news that New York State and New York City are going after Paul Manafort’s finances in an attempt at getting to Donald Trump (link), and today’s news that the Treasury Department’s financial crimes unit is turning over evidence of Trump’s past money laundering at Taj Mahal to the Senate Intel Committee (link). It’s not yet clear how closely related these various actions are, but it is clear that they’re all following the Russian money.”
Like Nixon, Trump can run but he can’t hide. Nor can the increasingly treasonous Republican party who’s trying to cover for him. More on that soon.
P.S. As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
