The Vichy Republicans: Just How Deep Does Their Treason Go?
Scott Sumner on the GOP:
“PS. Last October I was premature with this prediction:
We are currently in the circular firing squad phase. I eagerly await the “Hitler was so pissed the generals let him down that he decided to destroy Germany when he knew that he was going to lose” phase.
“But I still think that’s coming. When a political party has been naughty, there’s a high price to pay. And the GOP has been very, very naughty.”
Very naughty. Treason is pretty naughty. I know, I’m just a partisan Democrat, right? So here’s what Steve Schmidt, John McCain’s 2008 campaign strategist.
“Steve Schmidt: McCain, Graham, Sasse Might Want “Democratic Congress To Protect National Security”
“Any Republican member of Congress who takes the president, his spokespeople’s assertions that [Comey was fired] because he was unfair to Hillary Clinton is either a fool, or they have so lost sight in this era of tribal politics, of their responsibilities to the country, that they have become faithless to their oaths,” Schmidt said about the president’s memo detailing his reasons for firing FBI director James Comey.
“Schmidt next refers to this tweet from longtime chief of staff to Sen. John McCain, Mark Salter, suggesting that “the security of the United States might now depend on electing a Democratic Congress in 2018.”
Lost sight of their responsibilities to the country, have become faithless to their oaths.
Just on Wednesday evening-just before news broke of a Special Counsel, we learned that the GOP had known about Russia’s active measures on Trump’s behalf all along while mocking this as a conspiracy theory in public.
Now there’s a new report from the online political pundit Pudesto Loco-he has some very good sources-that the GOP did more than just know about the Russian hacking targeting Hillary Clinton and the Democrats, they were directing it.
I know, I know ‘how farfetched’ right? And two years ago, that’d be true. But we’re now with Alice in her Wonderland. What seems impossible now? With Trump there are true and false reports but nothing can be ruled out just becomes it seems improbable. According to pre 2015 logic or today?
A few weeks ago Seth Abramson laughing at Claude Taylor saying Jason Chaffetz was about to go. Now it has happened. Chaffetz is out the door on June 30 and his fellow GOPers would love to get rid of him sooner.
The Palmer Report on this new bombshell of GOP treachery:
“Roughly a month after Palmer Report brought you the story of intel community buzz asserting that Republican Party leaders including Paul Ryan had been caught on tape discussing Russia’s payments to the Donald Trump campaign (link), that recording finally surfaced yesterday and landed in the hands of the Washington Post (link). Now there is a new report asserting that the Republican leadership took things even further.”
“That assertion comes from online political pundit Puesto Loco, whose inside sources have a history of being proven correct. Here’s the latest that he’s revealed from his sources: “GOP Party is on tape telling the Russians what they want to be hacked” (link). He goes on to point out that the source is “Not sure whose voice speaks for Party” on the recording in question. But there are a very small number of people who could qualify as having been in a position to speak on behalf of the party.”
So note that this ‘Treason Tape’ was dismissed as just a ‘anti Trump conspiracy theory’ until now that the MSM has caught up to speed. Back to the Palmer Report.
“One of them is the aforementioned Paul Ryan. As we pointed out last night, it appears the intel community may now be laying the groundwork for its eventual takedown of Ryan in the Russia scandal (link). Another key Republican Party leader is Senator Mitch McConnell, who was also previously alleged to have been caught on tape discussing Russian payments to Trump, though that tape has not officially surfaced yet. And then there’s Reince Priebus, then the RNC Chair, and now Donald Trump’s White House Chief of Staff.”
“We’ll keep pursuing this new angle of the alleged recording of Republican leadership discussing hacking details with the Russians, and we’ll point out the this is single-sourced for now. But there’s clearly a whole lot more to the Paul Ryan story than merely the one tape which leaked yesterday. And what’s most notable here is that the intel community sat on that tape for a year before releasing it, meaning we’re now looking at a timed and coordinated effort to expose Ryan and the GOP leadership as having been complicit in the Russia scandal.”
No wonder that the remaining patriotic Republicans like Steve Schmidt, Mark Salter-and I suspect John McCain who is sick about the deal the GOP has made with the devil here-want a Democratic Congress in 2018 to protect the country’s national security.
As for this new report, as Bill Palmer qualifies, it’s single sourced right now. But it fits. As I noted on Twitter last night:
It makes sense. How would the Russians know what to hack without US political guidance, someone who knows US politics very well?

It also fits a larger pattern.
“Ex-NSA Exec: Republicans Will See “Large-Scale Political Cleansing”
“What’s important to understand is that no matter the elation that partisans may feel in being vindicated, the Republican complicity in compromising America’s democracy is a national disaster.”
“The GOP knew about Putin’s rise within their party, but kept it secret.”
To call the GOP the Party of Treason seems harsh. But as the old African American saying puts it: only the truth hurts.
UPDATE: Brian Beutler also has a post on the Party of Treason.

P.S. As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
