Trump Accuses Comey of Perjury
Which is not smart. Credit where credit is due-it was a major accomplishment by his staff to keep Trump from tweeting during Comey’s testimony though he’s made up for some lost time, post hoc.
Now that Trump is speaking he has called Comey ‘a liar and a leaker’ in so many words. But the trouble with this as a legal expert said on MSNBC this morning is that it puts Trump out more on on a limb. The GOP Senators were smart enough to keep this at the level of interpretationOk he said he hopes. He’s just new at this and didnt’ realize.
Because obstruction of justice is also related to intent.
But Trump is making a much more definitive statement-I never said I hope Comey drops the Flynn case.
This is a matter of fact-he either did or didn’t say it. What the GOP was trying to say is Maybe he did say it but didn’t have any bad intent though he shouldn’t have said it.
“A defiant President Donald Trump repeatedly attacked ousted FBI Director James Comey on Friday, accusing him of lying under oath and leaking sensitive information about their talks, even as congressional investigators upped the pressure on the White House to back up its claims.”
“After remaining quiet on Thursday, letting his lawyers and other surrogates rebut Comey’s testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Trump used a Rose Garden news conference with visiting Romanian President Klaus Iohannis to launch an array of counterclaims.”
“No collusion, no obstruction. He’s a leaker,” Trump said. “Yesterday showed no collusion, no obstruction.”
Again, the definitiveness boxes him in and leaves less wilggle room. It becomes a matter of fact and not interpretation. Proving that he said it rather than what he was thinking when he said it makes it simpler.
So a few things:
1. It asks us to decide who’s telling the truth-Comey or Trump. Not a hard choice as Trump is on the public record of being a habitual and arguably a pathological liar
1. It brings back the debate over whether they’re tapes again. I’m in the camp that there are. Why did he say it otherwise? My vote is there are.
Trump most certainly does not ‘tell it like it is’ as he and his apologists claim. Being ‘politically incorrect’ in his style is not honest-just insensitive and shameless.
But he does have a condition of political turrets which has a bad habit of spitting out the worst thing for him to say in public.
Now he says he wants to testify under oath.
“In response to a question about whether he would repeat that claim under oath, Trump indicated he would “100 percent” testify — quickly adding that he “would be glad to tell” special counsel Robert Mueller, the former FBI director overseeing the bureau’s probe into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 campaign, “what I just told you.”
Again notice the difference between he and Nixon. Nixon hid the tapes-they came to light because Butterfield refused to perjure himself before Congress.
“Nixon always fought the idea of the POTUS testifying as ‘weakening the Presidency.’
Trump’s mistake is thinking that his arrogance is smart. But in his whole life it always has gotten him through everything-until now.
So it’s rational based on his own experience but not on the terrain he’s on now-which he knows nothing about. Turns out lack of experience and knowledge is not the virtue it was sold as.
P.S. As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
