Mike Pence Lawyers Up
There’s an old saying-Whoever represents himself has a fool for a lawyer.
Mike Pence is not a fool in this regard. Indeed, in this he’s the opposite of Trump. Trump won’t shut up.
For example, Trump just tweeted this:
I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director! Witch Hunt
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 16, 2017
As Greg Sargent points out, this is offering up what could be a major piece in proving obstruction of justice.
Big: Trump just said Rosenstein told him to fire Comey.

Yet, Trump continues to act defiant about tweeting as if the media or Democrats want him to stop.
Robert Mueller finds it pretty helpful too

Hey-it’s your impeachment.
The one thing Pence understands is the virtue of lawyering up and keeping his mouth shut.
The key is that Nixon never went to jail but 69 members of his staff did. Erlichman and Haldeman ended up paying for their loyalty to Nixon. They never wanted to hire a lawyer until very late-and then they still were trying to defend themselves while being loyal to Tricky Dick.
Pence is not making this mistake and already has counsel outside the WH. Exactly-he needs someone to protect his own interests not Trump and the WH.
“A heightened sense of unease gripped the White House on Thursday, as President Trump lashed out at reports that he’s under scrutiny over whether he obstructed justice, aides repeatedly deflected questions about the probe and Vice President Pence acknowledged hiring a private lawyer to handle fallout from investigations into Russian election meddling.”
“Pence’s decision to hire Richard Cullen, a Richmond-based lawyer who previously served as a U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia, came less than a month after Trump hired his own private lawyer.”
“The hiring of Cullen, whom an aide said Pence was paying for himself, was made public a day after The Washington Post reported that special counsel Robert S. Mueller III is widening his investigation to examine whether the president attempted to obstruct justice.”
A defiant Trump at multiple points Thursday expressed his frustration with reports about that development, tweeting that he is the subject of “the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history,” and one that he said is being led by “some very bad and conflicted people.”
Again, notice the diametrically different styles of the two. Trump seems not to get that this Special Counsel investigation is not a political campaign.
UPDATE: And wouldn’t you know it? After throwing Rod Rosenstein under the bus:
Bus. Meet Rosenstein. Rosenstein. Meet bus. pic.twitter.com/Y0AX2Uz6V9
— Claude Taylor (@TrueFactsStated) June 16, 2017
we get this new report from ABC:
“Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein acknowledges he may need to recuse himself from Russia probe.”
“The senior Justice Department official with ultimate authority over the special counsel’s probe of Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2016 election has privately acknowledged to colleagues that he may have to recuse himself from the matter, which he took charge of only after Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ own recusal, sources tell ABC News.”
Just a coincidence that this story breaks right after this tweet?
It's stunning how quickly Mueller created dream team & 13 more attorneys this week. All eager to get this traitor gone from WH
— (((Stand Up))) (@LoisSmithers) June 16, 2017
And contrast how fast Mueller got his dream team with how hard it has been for Trump to get any top Washington lawyers. He’s stuck with the same NY charlatan that’s represented him for years.
As for Pence, he could be in for some serious trouble. We have all his many misstatements about Flynn-how did he get the position with his problems and being investigated by the FBI? It’s very charitable to assume many of those misstatements weren’t lies.
And Pence was involved with the Comey firing:
“As Trump’s No. 2 and as head of the transition team, Pence has increasingly found himself drawn into the widening Russia investigation.”
“Pence — along with Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Kushner, Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and White House Counsel Donald McGahn — was one of the small group of senior advisers the president consulted as he mulled his decision to fire Comey, which is now a focus of Mueller’s investigation.”
“He also was entangled in the events leading up to the dismissal of Michael Flynn, Trump’s former national security adviser, who originally misled Pence about his contact with Russian officials — incorrect claims that Pence himself then repeated publicly.”
“The vice president was kept in the dark for nearly two weeks about Flynn’s misstatements, before learning the truth in a Post report. Trump ultimately fired Flynn for misleading the vice president.”
“There were also news reports that Flynn’s attorneys had alerted Trump’s transition team, which Pence led, that Flynn was under federal investigation for his secret ties to the Turkish government as a paid lobbyist — a claim the White House disputes. And aides to Pence, who was running the transition team, said the vice president was never informed of Flynn’s overseas work with Turkey, either.”
Again, it’s very charitable to believe that he was kept in the dark. Flynn ‘certainly has a story to tell’ and a lot of that story is about Mike Pence.
Politico has a piece that shows how delicate Pence’s dance-as the possible Trump replacement ahead of schedule is.
P.S. So the Gravis poll against Peter King NY2 and it has good news-almost too good to believe.
In my March poll I trailed King by 11 and thought that was very good news. Now Gravis has me up by 10? Still, the moment of truth is next week when Gravis writes up the press release.
And-yes-I do need donations if I have any hope of bringing around the local party to seeing that I am the chance to break out of the party’s long losing streak against King.
Whether you live in NY 2 or across the country, you can donate. As yourself whether you cannot afford even $5 or $10 dollars.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Peter King is on the House intelligence committee. I think we all know that he will never be any part of the solution for getting to the bottom of Trump Russia.
Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
We can have a Dem Congress, we must have a Dem Cogress, and we will.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
