What Yesterday’s Attack on the London Mosque Tells Us About Political Violence
It showed that only some kinds of political violence offend the Right. PM Theresa May reacted as any decent person should react to the terrorist attack on the London mosque yesterday:
A van plowed into a group of Muslim worshipers leaving prayers at a pair of north London mosques early Monday, leaving one person dead and injuring 10 others in what is being called a “terrorist attack.”
Witnesses said the driver of the vehicle was heard shouting that he wanted to kill Muslims.
“This is being treated as a terrorist attack,” said Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu told reporters. He added that the driver of the van was arrested on suspicion of murder.
“The latest terrorist attack in London — the third in three months — was “every bit as sickening” as those that have come before, said British Prime Minister Theresa May. She hailed the “bravery” of locals for detaining the driver at the scene in the north London district of Finsbury Park.”
“Hatred and evil of this kind will never succeed,” she said.
Again, this is how any decent person should react-her words shouldn’t be controversial. And yet:

The Right wing couldn’t have been more blatant in their attempt to associate political violence as the sole providence of the political left. Rush Limbaugh came out and said-political violence happens only on the left and the Alexandria shooting is the personification of the Democratic party:
“Now, I also want to say he probably started off this way. I don’t know that this guy’s ever been a rational, invisible functioning member of a community, but at some point he got radicalized, and if you dig deep you’ll find — we’ve got examples of it to share with you. This guy is the exact personification when I sit here and talk about the lunatic fringe base, the deranged base of the Democrat Party, this is the guy. This is the face. This is the picture. This is what you get when you stoke and fuel hatred, raw hatred and resentment, at some point it’s gonna blow over, because it cannot be contained, this kind of rage and repeated disappointment.”
This is the guy. In other words, he is typical of the Democratic party, typical of liberals, the face of liberal Democrats. Talk about demonization. Anyone who criticizes Trump or the GOP is a crazed terrorist.
“You add climate change probably to this guy’s list of grievances, and I think everybody ought to take a step back and realize this guy is not isolated. This guy is probably typical. Not that there’s going to be rampant shootings, but he just happened to go over the edge and pull the trigger. But he, to me, is exactly what I am unfortunately worried about when I look at the way all of these lies and all these nothingness, nothing burger stories have now been out there for month after month after month.”
“And you add everything else that the Democrat and the liberal media agenda is. It’s nothing but anger, it’s nothing but rage, it’s nothing but hatred, and it has to have an outlet. And they know it. The fact is, they know it. The Democrats know it, and the media know it. It wasn’t that long ago that the Democrats, we have a story in the Drive-By Media, they were trying to walk back this notion of Trump impeachment. This is when the Russia story was beginning to disintegrate. I mean, there never has been anything to it. But remember we highlighted it here, began to walk it back because the story indicated they were very concerned about the impact.”
The sad truth is that there is a long history of political violence in our country and it’s not the providence of any particular political ideology. You have right wing shooters and left wing shooters, and don’t forget the no wing shooters.
But here is a clear difference between the left and right. After Alexandria, the Democrats prayed for their GOP colleagues and Bernie Sanders-who the shooter was a big fan of-condemned this terrible violence in no uncertain terms.
No liberals in any way defended the shooter or did anything other than condemn his shameful, violent actions. Unlike Rebel Media’s tweet above, non one said-‘Well the GOPers really are jerks’-even if there’s truth in it nobody said that then or used it a justification it’s not.
I mean if you wanted to be like Rebel Media, you’d point out that there is little admirable about Steve Scalise. He has a history of being friendly with David Duke, etc.
But no one said that, and though I’m the opposite of a fan of his I was genuinely relieved to hear he was ok.
But the response by much of the Right to the attack on the mosque speaks volumes. For them terrorism is only evil if the perpetuators were either Muslim or can be associated with the left.
Just like the victims only deserve empathy if they weren’t Muslim or on the left.
UPDATE: Another terrible Islamophobic attack:
“Officials: 17-year-old Muslim girl assaulted and killed after leaving Virginia mosque.”
“The death of a Virginia teenager who police say was assaulted and then disappeared after leaving a mosque in the Sterling area isn’t being investigated as a hate crime, authorities said Monday.”
“On Sunday, police found the girl’s remains and a 22-year-old man has been charged with murder in connection with the case.”
“The mosque, the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) in Sterling, and relatives identified the girl as 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen of Reston.”
“Fairfax County police identified the man charged with murder in her death as Darwin Martinez Torres of Sterling. On Monday, they did not release any explanation as to why they weren’t investigating the murder as a hate crime.”
Really-that’s not a hate crime? After the Alexandria there was wall to wall coverage the rest of the week and some GOPers wanted it called a hate crime-against themselves.
But there is only silence even though unlike Scalise and company, this 17 year old Muslim girl was killed.
It all speaks volumes and shows that the Right doesn’t really oppose terrorist violence but selectively uses it to fan outrage for their political agenda.
P.S. So the Gravis poll against Peter King NY2 and it has good news-almost too good to believe.
In my March poll I trailed King by 11 and thought that was very good news. Now Gravis has me up by 10? Still, the moment of truth is next week when Gravis writes up the press release.
I can use any help I can get at this point-volunteers or supporters who live in NY 2. Donations whatever your zip code. These days we can’t just support a local Dem we need a Dem Congress. Which is why I’ve donated few hundred to Jon Ossoff.
Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House-$5 or $10 can do so much.
If you feel that you can’t I, of course, understand-who is rich these days? But please do me one favor: ask yourself privately, mentally, if you really can’t spare $5 dollars. If you can honestly say you can’t, no worries.
We can have a Dem Congress, we must have a Dem Cogress, and we will.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
