Russia are You Listening? Clearly GOP Operative Brad Smith Was
Finally, a story about Russia collusion. Many have insisted on being very skeptical that it happened-which I don’t understand.
Russia, are you listening?
Clearly GOP operative Peter Smith was. Smith is a long time sleazy GOP operative who was paying Arkansas troopers for dirt on the Clintons in the early 1990s. In September 2016, he was a still a sleazy GOP operative looking for dirt on the Clintons this time he was looking for the phantom 30,000 deleted emails from Hillary’s server.
She had every right to delete them as they were personal. But Smith and the rest of the Clinton hating world continued to believe in their deranged fantasies that
1. She was lying that they were personal.
2. That despite no evidence of it, Russian hackers were in possession of the 30,000 deleted emails from her server.
“Mr. Smith’s focus was some 33,000 emails Mrs. Clinton said were deleted because they were deemed personal. Mr. Smith said he believed that the emails might have been obtained by hackers and that they actually concerned official matters Mrs. Clinton wanted to conceal—two notions for which he offered no evidence. Mrs. Clinton gave the State Department tens of thousands of emails related to official business.”
Peter Smith did worry, however, that his sordid Clinton hating past would discredit whatever emails he was able to secure from Russian hackers.
I love Wikileaks:
“Mr. Smith said after vetting batches of emails offered to him by hacker groups last fall, he couldn’t be sure enough of their authenticity to leak them himself. “We told all the groups to give them to WikiLeaks,” he said. WikiLeaks has never published those emails or claimed to have them.”
Give them to Wikileaks. Congress really should also have Assange speak before Congress-on video.
“He said he understood the risk in publishing the emails himself. If, under public scrutiny, they proved not to be genuine, “people would say we made them up,” he said, and the whole project would be dismissed as a Republican hit job on the Clinton campaign. In the early 1990s, Mr. Smith helped publicize Arkansas state troopers’ claims that then-Gov. Bill Clinton had enlisted them to arrange trysts with women, an unproven allegation denied by the Clinton White House.”
People would say we made them up. You mean because in the 1990s you made up stories about the Clintons and the Arkansas state troopers? That as you made stuff up before people would be suspicious you were making them up again?
Russia are you listening?
That was what Donald Trump said at his Last Press Conference.
“U.S. intelligence agencies have accused the Russians of stealing emails from the Democratic National Committee and Mrs. Clinton’s campaign chairman, John Podesta, and providing them to WikiLeaks last summer as part of a multifaceted operation to interfere with the election and help Mr. Trump’s campaign. Mr. Trump on July 27 publicly encouraged Russia to go further and find the Clinton “emails that are missing.” Asked about that on Monday, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Mr. Trump was joking.”
Just a joke! And it is pretty funny. Like if someone ‘jokes’ about killing someone in public and that person turns up murdered just a few weeks later. Hilarious.
Again that was Herr Trump’s last press conference though the media didn’t notice this fact. Absurdly pundits were still talking about how much better access Trump gave the media than Hillary after the election-though she had many pressers after September 1, 2016, and Trump never gave another presser after Russia are you listening?
He has given exactly one press conference since he’s been the so-called President.
This is like OJ Simpson’s book-‘If I did it.’ The Trump campaign: ‘If Mike Flynn coordinated with Russia.’
“GOP Operative Sought Clinton Emails From Hackers, Implied a Connection to Flynn.”
“Peter W. Smith portrayed the former general as an ally in an effort, independent of the Trump campaign, to find personal emails deleted by Hillary Clinton.”
“A Trump campaign official said that Mr. Smith didn’t work for the campaign, and that if Mr. Flynn coordinated with him in any way, it would have been in his capacity as a private individual. The White House declined to comment.”
“A private individual in September, 2016, In the stretch drive for the campaign with Flynn being a high ranking foreign policy adviser to Herr Trump-and who would be appointed his NSC adviser.”
Russia are you listening? Clearly Peter Smith was.
As was Roger Stone. Indeed, what’s striking about this WSJ bomshell is how similar this story is to Roger Stone’s.
“The operation Mr. Smith described is consistent with information that has been examined by U.S. investigators probing Russian interference in the elections.”
“Those investigators have examined reports from intelligence agencies that describe Russian hackers discussing how to obtain emails from Mrs. Clinton’s server and then transmit them to Mr. Flynn via an intermediary, according to U.S. officials with knowledge of the intelligence.”
“It isn’t clear who that intermediary might have been or whether Mr. Smith’s operation was the one allegedly under discussion by the Russian hackers. The reports were compiled during the same period when Mr. Smith’s group was operating, according to the officials.”
Roger Stone had boasted CSPAN last August about his own ‘back channel’ to ‘hero Assange’ via an intermediary about-the 30,000 delated emails from Hillary’s server.
Again, for people trying to figure out what to make of this story, just reflect on how similar it was to Roger Stone’s.
Question-is Peter Smith’s intermediary the same as Roger Stone’s? Stone had claimed that his intermediary was an American journalist-but there are theories that it was actually Nigel Farage-who we know is a close buddy of Assange and though ‘forgetful’ of why he visits Mr. Assange.
I saw Michael Isikoff on Chris Hayes last night still voicing skepticism, still claiming it’s ‘very murky.’ This guy has done some good investigative reporting but perhaps being an investigative reporter-at least in his vein-makes you a terrible intelligence analyst.
Isikoff complains that there’s no evidence he ever got the 30,000 emails. Of course not. There’s no evidence they ever existed. But Peter Smith, Roger Stone, and Donald Trump all had deluded themselves that they were. And were fine working with Russian hackers to obtain them.
It’s the clear intent of Smith to collude with Russian hackers.
“Mr. Smith died at age 81 on May 14, which was about 10 days after the Journal interviewed him. His account of the email search is believed to be his only public comment on it.”
“His project began over Labor Day weekend 2016 when Mr. Smith, a private-equity executive from Chicago active in Republican politics, said he assembled a group of technology experts, lawyers and a Russian-speaking investigator based in Europe to acquire emails the group theorized might have been stolen from the private server Mrs. Clinton used as secretary of state.”
“In the interview with the Journal, Mr. Smith said he and his colleagues found five groups of hackers who claimed to possess Mrs. Clinton’s deleted emails, including two groups he determined were Russians.”
“We knew the people who had these were probably around the Russian government,” Mr. Smith said.
So he clearly was fine working with Russian intelligence-which is what the NYT story in February-that Comey claimed was wrong-asserted.
The Journal takes pains to describe Peter Smith as ‘acting independently of the Trump campaign’ but, Michael Flynn was a pretty important member of the Trump campaign.
“In phone conversations, Mr. Smith told a computer expert he was in direct contact with Mr. Flynn and his son, according to this expert. The person said an anti-Clinton research document prepared by Mr. Smith’s group identified the younger Mr. Flynn as someone associated with the effort. The expert said that based on his conversations with Mr. Smith, he understood the elder Mr. Flynn to be coordinating with Mr. Smith’s group in his capacity as a Trump campaign adviser.”
“In conversations with members of his circle and with others he tried to recruit to help him, the GOP operative, Peter W. Smith, implied he was working with retired Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn, at the time a senior adviser to then-candidate Donald Trump.”
“He said, ‘I’m talking to Michael Flynn about this—if you find anything, can you let me know?’” said Eric York, a computer-security expert from Atlanta who searched hacker forums on Mr. Smith’s behalf for people who might have access to the emails.”
“Emails written by Mr. Smith and one of his associates show that his small group considered Mr. Flynn and his consulting company, Flynn Intel Group, to be allies in their quest.”
“What role, if any, Mr. Flynn may have played in Mr. Smith’s project is unclear. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Mr. Smith said he knew Mr. Flynn, but he never stated that Mr. Flynn was involved.”
He didn’t? He claimed that he was talking to Flynn about it. I don’t get these legalistic quibbles
Mr. Flynn didn’t respond to requests for comment.
Not publicly. But there are a lot of reports that he is cooperating with the FBI and has been for months.
Remember what Flynn’s attorney said: He certainly has a story to tell.
Clearly a simply earth shattering one. That gets bigger with every new bombshell and revelation.
