Morning Joe Repeats the ‘Trump is a Different Kind of Republican’ Zombie Argument
Now that Trump fired Reince and Spicer this argument is making a comeback. Morning Joe made the specious claim that Trump was a Democrat until 2011.
Joe has often made a variant of this claim that Trump ‘Was a Democrat most of his life.’ The only problem with it is it’s not true. Not even close.
I wrote that months ago but zombie arguments never die. Throughout most of Trump’s life he-like his father Fred Trump before him-was a Republican. Now his father and then him conducted business in NY so it didn’t pay to advertise this fact too loudly. But it is a fact.
If you follow Roger Stone’s timeline in his own book about 2016 this is clear.
It’s very clear that Roger and Trump co-opted the Reform party in 1999 with the purpose of taking out Pat Buchanan which they did by repeatedly calling Buchanan a Nazi. Which is ironic because while true, it also proves the maxim ‘Takes one to know one.’
But Stone makes clear that after they took out Buchanan and destroyed the Reform party from within Trump re registered as a Republican and supported W in 2000. This despite during the Reform primary his claiming the ‘GOP is too crazy now.’
To be sure, Trump and Stone always understood that small gestures go a long way. So Trump went out of his way to say at the time that Bill Clinton shouldn’t be impeached. Trump-there’s not question-is a very good agent provocateur.
Because he said Bill shouldn’t be impeached and claimed during the primary to be for a wealth tax-a lie he continued to tell during the GOP primary-people wrongly concluded he wasn’t a Republican-and later that he was a ‘different kind of Republican.’
His ‘Democrat period’ was very short. Again it seems to encompass only 2004 and be totally related to his and Roger Stone’s bankrolling of Al Sharpton’s primary run where Sharpton’s mission was to suggest Howard Dean was unfriendly to African Americans-or at least to the issues they care about.
This remains an unexplained embarrassment for Al Sharpton, by the way as his primary run that year was the catalyst for him improving his public image and his MSNBC show.
I’ve asked more than once-is this why he never endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016? Because Roger Stone and Donald Trump called in a favor?
But by 2008 Trump was back in the GOP field and supporting John McCain. No matter how you size it, Morning Joe is mistaken: Trump has been a Republican for most of his life.
This claim to the contrary is Morning Joe’s variant of a widespread MSM zombie argument that Trump is ‘A different kind of Republican.’

Greg Sargent has the perfect rejoinder:
Weird that Trump's near-total split from the GOP includes a full embrace of major pillars of Paul Ryan's agenda https://t.co/ks1HShdtEJ

This is the key point. Just the other night, Chris Hayes talked as if he thought that at any moment Trump would put forward a Keynesian stimulus that Bernie Sanders will co-sponsor.
I say this not to pick on Hayes in particular-I love his show-but it sort of shows how much this zombie argument never dies.
You often hear that Trump is less ideological. But this is why Haye’s colleague Rachel Maddow is so right: judge Trump’s WH on what they do not what they say.
She’s right-when your dealing with a pathological liar the words coming out of his mouth are meaningless. Judge him by what he does.
And the Trump Administration has been the most Right wing in modern history. Then too, remember that Scaramucci’s ideology is besides the point-his job is media spinmeister. If you look at the agency level leaders the picture becomes clearer. Those are run by Right wing ideologues who largely don’t believe in the agency they are overseeing.
The extreme case is Rick Perry who is running the department he couldn’t even remember in a 2012 POTUS debate.
