NYT: Trump Pressured Mitch McConnell to “Protect Him’ From Russia Probe
It’s amazing how much the I word is coming up among Republicans lately. Yesterday we looked at the reports that show that since Bannon came back-presuming he ever left-the word ‘impeachment’ has come up repeatedly with talk that if Trump ‘goes the wrong way’ Bannon led Breitbart would ‘work with Paul Ryan on impeachment.’
But Bannon and his website are one thing but now Mitch McConnell? Not that the GOP Senator said it himself in quite these words but the implication is quite clear.
The NYTimes totally buries the lead in this piece about how Trump and McConnell are still feuding and haven’t spoken since a shouting match on August 9.
“Before silence descended between the two Republican leaders, according to the New York Times, Trump and McConnell had a “profane shouting match” on a phone call earlier in August.”
“In that conversation, Trump accused McConnell of bungling Obamacare repeal and suggested that McConnell had not sufficiently protected him from the federal investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, unnamed Republicans briefed on the conversation told the New York Times.”
I quoted this directly from Talking Points Memo rather than the NYT as the Times totally buries this in the page. But the fact that Trump pressured McConnell to end the investigation could be yet another instance of obstruction of justice.
Last night Rachel Maddow pointed out it’s a potential violation of U.S. Code 150
Barbara McQuade-a former U.S. attorney-a different statute than DOJ but stlil obstruction. So this could in itself be another article of impeachment. The NYT had more than a dozen sources. These GOP sources must know what these revelations could mean for Trump.
And the I word was directly breached as well by a Mitch McConnell ally:
“The quickest way for him to get impeached is for Trump to knock off Jeff Flake and Dean Heller and be faced with a Democrat-led Senate,” said Billy Piper, a lobbyist and former McConnell chief of staff.”
Roger Stone-of course-is advising Trump to do the opposite:
“The president should start bumping off incumbent Republican members of Congress in primaries,” Mr. Stone said. “If he did that, Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan would wet their pants and the rest of the Republicans would get in line.
No doubt Stone and not Piper are closer to the illegitmate President’s thinking.
“There’s only one way to interpret this: McConnell is using his close surrogate Piper to introduce the idea of Trump being impeached in the nation’s largest newspaper. Sure, he’s thinly veiling it by suggesting that it’s the Democrats who would end up impeaching him. But McConnell and Piper know full well that an impeachment conviction requires a two-thirds majority in the Senate, meaning that Senators from both parties would be involved in convicting any President.”
If nothing else it is notable that the day after Bannon allies were casually bandying about the word ‘impeachment’ a Mitch McConnell ally is doing the same.
UPDATE: The Daily Kos:
Trump appears to be some kind of obstruction of justice machine.
“Mitch McConnell blocks President Obama from alerting the public to Russian conspiracy during the 2016 campaign, and this is the thanks he gets?”
“Impeachment just got a tiny bit more plausible.”
A tweet from CNN reporter, Manu Raju:
Sources confirm to me Trump blew up and swore at McConnell at not just Russia probe but also Russia sanctions bill. https://t.co/it94dACfae
