To Get to the Truth About 2016 Election We Need a Democratic Congress
Devin Nunes. Need I say more? As the leader of the House Intelligence Committee he clearly has seen his role not as getting to the truth of Russian interference and possible collusion but as Trump’s personal defense attorney.
There was his outrageous leaking of classified info in March which he claimed somehow exonerated Trump.
His own conduct made him the subject of an Ethics Committee investigation. He then recused himself-though later argued he hadn’t really recused himself and might lead the investigation again. In practice though, his role has been filled by Mike Conway since.
But then we learned that Nunes’ aides were in the U.K. chasing down Christopher Steele.
REVEALED: Report suggests Devin Nunes may be be conducting a shadow investigation of Russian dossier author.”
“Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) may still be directing his own investigation into leaks related to Trump’s campaign ties to Russia, even after stepping aside during an ethics inquiry.”
“Politico first reported their visit Friday, saying the two GOP staffers left their contact information at the office of Steele’s attorney and then with another associate.”
Ok-no doubt Nunes is a really bad case. There are others-like the House Judiciary who decided to investigate not Russia but ‘Why did Loretta Lynch say ‘matter’ and not ‘investigation?’
Then there’s Dana Rohrbacher and his interview with Julian Assange. He suggested pardoning Assange in exchange for presumably for him giving information which exculpates Donald Trump.
Ok, in all fairness, Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee say Mike Conway has done a lot better and the word seems to be that Adam Schiff if largely running the House Intelligence Committee investigation.
And no doubt Richard Burr in the Senate, has done-at least by comparison-a much better job; it’s almost impossible to do a worse job than Nunes.
The fact is, however, that Burr like Nunes was a Trump transition official. And when he talks about a timetable, this makes me a little nervous. This is actually from a NYT piece back on August 12, but I hadn’t come across it until now:
“Senator Richard Burr, the initially reluctant but now determined leader of the Senate Intelligence Committee inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 election, said the investigation had expanded beyond its original scope based on new evidence, but he hoped to complete it this year to allow Congress to take steps to prevent future efforts at tampering by Moscow.”
”What continues this investigation are the names of individuals that we didn’t know at the time, the documents that we weren’t aware of, the communications, the cables, the emails, the phone logs of individuals that we wouldn’t have thought then that we needed to interview or to look at their records,” said Mr. Burr, the North Carolina Republican who is chairman of the intelligence panel.
Mr. Burr said he remained “hopeful that we can bring finality to this by the end of the year, but I also can’t anticipate anything new that might come up that we don’t know today that would extend it by a month or two months. So I am conscious of the fact that I need to do this expeditiously, but I need to do it thoroughly and I won’t do anything to cut it short.”
I sure hope not. The Mueller investigation from everything we’re hearing should go well into 2018 and 2019.
I sure hope Burr isn’t talking about cutting it short to make it easier on GOP candidates in 2018. Here’s the reality though. There should be a full Select Committee-ideally in both the House and the Senate.
Watergate had a Select Committee. Indeed, so did Whitewater and Benghazi. Do Republicans not think that foreign subversion of our election is at least as important as fake scandals like Whitewater and Benghazi? Benghazi had nine investigations.
Let’s face it, only a Democratic Congress will give this the proper attention it deserves. We need a Select Committee and possibly an Independent Counsel as well.
Certainly at least in the House we need Democratic leadership to truly investigate this properly. Then the House Judiciary can stop investigating ‘Matter vs Investigation’ and get serious.
As you may know, I’m running for the NY 2nd District Congressional seat. I hope very much to join Nancy Pelosi, Adam Schiff, Elijah Cummings, Ted Lieu, and Maxine Waters.
Trust me-we will have a real investigation if the constituents of NY2 see fit to make me their next Congressman. Me and these fine Dems above will insist on it.
Note as well that Peter King currently sits on House Intelligence. You think swapping him with me might pick the pace up a little?
