No, Manafort’s Wiretapping Doesn’t Vindicate Trump but Quite the Opposite
If anyone still doubts that Trump apologists are the most ignorant and clueless souls around, just look at them celebrating the news that Trump’s former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, was wiretapped both during and after the 2016 campaign.
Why are they celebrating what is very bad news for Trump and his friends? Because they-quite mistakenly-believe that this news vindicates the Illegitimate President’s false claim that he was wiretapped by Obama during the campaign.
To digress-it is surreal to try to count the number of parallels between Trump Russia Collusion and Watergate. Another big similarity is that Nixon to tried this same Whabout defense; But what about LBJ? He spied on me in 1968.
Nixon totally glossed over why LBJ would have had reason to spy on him-because he sold out the country’s foreign policy by getting South Vietnam to scuttle LBJ’s peace talks in late 1968.
For the record, no evidence has even been found to show that LBJ himself spied on Nixon. But quite honestly, it’s rather surreal for someone committing treason against his own country to win an election to be acting indignant.
In any case, Trump’s apologists are somehow totally misreading the news about Manafort. They think it vindicates Trump’s claim he was being wiretapped by Obama.
“On Monday night it was revealed that former Donald Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort had been under FISA warrant surveillance before and after the election, and that phone calls between Manafort and Trump were likely intercepted as part of that warrant. Even as those in the real world understood this to mean that Trump and Manafort are both screwed, Trump’s remaining fans willfully misinterpreted it as evidence that Trump was correct when he claimed President Obama wiretapped him.”
“When the news of the Manafort wiretap was revealed, the scene across social media was the rough equivalent of one team’s fan base celebrating a game-winning shot, as the other team’s fans celebrated what they mistakenly thought was a missed shot. Trump’s supporters simply could not seem to understand that the FISA surveillance warrant on Manafort’s communications was the result of a judge signing off on the belief that Manafort was committing crimes. Trump wasn’t a part of the FISA warrant. He simply inserted himself into it by calling Manafort, whose phone was being tapped.”
Exactly. Trump was just foolish and clueless enough to
1. Hire someone to run his campaign who had been under investigation since 2014. This is key: Manafort was under investigation before he ran Trump’s campaign. Indeed, before there even was a Trump campaign.
2. Continue to speak to Manafort even after the campaign, even in 2017 when it was already known he was under FBI investigation. In other words, all this proves is how recklessly ignorant and stupid Trump really is.
And he ran against Hillary on the notion that she was too big a risk as she was under FBI investigation. All the while his own campaign manager was under investigation.
Claude Taylor explains this to Trump apologists succinctly:
No, you useless twats, Obama did not wiretap Trump while he was treasoning. He was "incidentally collected" on Manafort's FISA warrant.

But 3 is the kicker:
3. There is nothing to celebrate if you’re a Trump supporter. Quite the opposite. The other big news about Manafort last night is that he has been told he’s likely to be indicted. What this means is: Mueller and the FBI want to flip him.
Presuming he has already been flipped as Louise Mensch’s sources told her he already is, months ago.
“Sources with links to the intelligence community report that Federal Marshals executed two search and seizure warrants at Trump Tower on Friday, May 19.”
“One of the warrants covered an electronic storage space in Trump Tower. Several electronic items were seized as a result of this search.”
“Another of the warrants, sources report, was served on Paul Manafort’s apartment in Trump Tower.”
“Unlike the first warrant, this warrant was served, sources say, with “consent.” That means that Mr. Manafort is almost certainly co-operating with Federal authorities.”
It’s amazing how much Mensch has written that was hand-waved away and laughed off at first then looks much better with time.
It’s fitting that she lives in England as Keynes-one of the greatest Englishmen, indeed, greatest men- ever said: First they laugh at you and then they claim you said nothing new.
If you follow the criticism of Mensch over time this is the story that plays out again and again.
“Why is Mueller’s team homing in on Paul Manafort? I asked a former federal prosecutor.”
“Short answer: They want to flip him.”
“There must be some concern about the destruction of evidence; the mere fact that Mueller executed a search warrant as opposed to just issuing a subpoena suggests that. But what really confirms is the fact that Mueller got what’s called a “no knock” warrant, which requires him to demonstrate to the judge that there’s good reason why the FBI should not have to knock and announce their presence, and the only conceivable reason to do that is a concern about the destruction of evidence.”
“There also appears to be a concerted effort to flip Manafort. Is that how you read it?”
“Yes, that’s likely the other reason why Mueller is being so aggressive with Manafort. They want to flip him. People talk loosely in the press about Mueller wanting to flip Manafort against Trump, but there might also be others that he’s looking to use him against, people that Manafort might have information on. What makes it most clear to me that Mueller’s team wants to flip Manafort is the statements to him that in July notifying him that he will be indicted. That’s the sort of thing that I’ve done as a prosecutor when I’m trying to flip someone.”
Mariotti does agree that Mueller’s investigation is proceeding at a fast pace but he doesn’t expect the investigation to concluded until at least 2018.
This has been my hypothesis all along too-that it’s not going to happen overnight.
In addition, it’s important to get that as important as Mueller’s investigation is, it should not be seen as a substitute for Congress’ own need to do a thorough, exhaustive, and comprehensive investigation.
Remember that while Manafort, Michael Flynn, Michael Cohen. Roger Stone-and even Trump family members like Jared Kushner, and Eric Trump-could go to prison, for Trump himself to be punished for whatever wrongdoing he’s found guilty of, we need a political punishment that only Congress can supply; AKA impeachment.
And for that we need a Democratic House. Excuse me, if I’m skeptical that an Intelligence Committee run by Devin Nunes, Kevin McCarthy, and Peter King will get it done.
We need one run by Adam Schiff, Eric Swallwell and yes-Mike Sax NY2 to get the needed political solution to this constitutional crisis our country is facing.
P.S. Hello! I’m Mike Sax Democratic candidate for NY2. If you want to ride the Impeachment Train all the way to Washington DC in 2019 then please vote for me, Mike Sax NY2.
And-get it on the t shirt.
Think of the shirt as a one time investment in restoring legitimacy to this country.
