On Tuesday 11/14 Jeff Sessions to Testify Publicly Before House Judiciary
It couldn’t happen to a nicer unreconstructed segregationist. We knew he was a remorseless perjurer, but the revelations about George Papadopoulos multiple meetings with the Russians reveal that Sessions was well aware of talk about Russia helping the Trump campaign and releasing incriminating Hillary emails.
It’s also clear that Jeff Sessions was aware of Carter Page’s trip to Moscow in July, 2016.
So he has a lot of explaining to do. Sessions’ previous testimony before the Senate has consisted of much very self righteous non denial denials.
“That’s because Sessions has repeatedly testified to the Senate that he knows nothing about any collusion with the Russians. (Though in his most recent appearance, he categorized that narrowly by saying he did not “conspire with Russia or an agent of the Russian government to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.”)
“But the Papadopoulos plea shows that Sessions — then acting as Trump’s top foreign policy adviser — was in a March 31, 2016, meeting with Trump, at which Papadopoulos explained “he had connections that could help arrange a meeting between then-candidate Trump and President Putin.” It also shows that Papadopoulos kept a number of campaign officials in the loop on his efforts to set up a meeting between Trump and Putin, though they secretly determined that the meeting “should be someone low level in the campaign so as not to send any signal,” itself a sign the campaign was trying to hide its efforts to make nice with the Russians.”
Correct. As Al Franken says, Sessions keeps moving the goalposts to the point where it becamse ‘Ok I did talk to Russian officials about the campaign but it wasn’t IN DETAIL’ and ‘I did not see anyone in this campaign engaging in collusion with any Russians.’
Amazingly, post the Papadopoulos revelations we now CAN hit that 75 yard field goal as we DO have evidence that Sessions DID in point of fact know of campaign officials colluding with Russians.
So that was more perjury when he claimed this never happened in his hearing in October. Now he’s scheduled for another public hearing tomorrow this time in front of the House Judiciary Committee. Suddenly Bob Goodlatte who has announced his own retirement post last week’s election shellacking for the GOP wants to investigate Russia seriously and not just Loretta Lynch.
“Sessions’s role in President Trump’s campaign has attracted renewed scrutiny after George Papadopoulos, a low-level foreign policy adviser to the campaign, pleaded guilty to lying to FBI agents about his Russian contacts.”
Papadopoulos has been cooperating with the FBI since he was arrested in July.
In addition, Carter Page testified to the House Intelligence Committee that he spoke to Jeff Sessions about his July 2016 Moscow trip.
“In a letter to Sessions on Tuesday, Democrats on the committee signaled they would have questions for him about Papadopoulos, citing his past statements that he had no knowledge of Trump campaign affiliates communicating with the Russian government during the campaign.”
“As Bill Palmer notes, there’s been a seismic shift in the attitude about the Dems toward Sessions. Previously, as noxious as Sessions has been as an unreconstructed segregationist running the DOJ, Dems worried that firing Sessions could give Trump the space to put someone else there who could shutdown the Special Counsel-or maybe go off on some fishing expedition targeting Hillary Clinton. ”
“Last week it became clear that Sessions had known all about the Donald Trump campaign underlings who were plotting various conspiracies with the Russian government during the election. This has prompted the Democrats in Congress to collectively decide that it’s time to force Sessions out of office. They’re calling for his resignation on Twitter and on cable news. They’re hauling him in to testify in public on Tuesday about these revelations about his role in the Trump-Russia scandal. This is a clear attempt at making Sessions so radioactive, he either has to resign, or Trump has to fire him. “But wait a minute,” you’re asking.
For a long stretch of time, it was believed that Trump might fire Sessions so he could also fire Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, and then appoint someone as Acting Attorney General who is willing to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller. However, the Democrats are clearly no longer worried about that scenario. It’s as if the Republicans have tipped off that they now want Mueller to remain on the job and get rid of Trump, so they won’t have Trump hanging around their necks as they head into the midterms.”
I don’t know if the GOP is ready to get rid of Trump yet. I still believe we won’t get rid of Trump until there’s a Democratic Congress. But it does seem that Trump has no space to fire Mueller, especially in light of the indictments, most significantly Papadopoulos who relates directly to the issue of collusion with the Russians in the election.
P.S. I’m Mike Sax, I’m running for Congress in the NY 2nd District and I’m a Hillary Clinton Democrat.
Meeting her recently was one of the biggest honors in my life to stand next to such a fine public servant and trailblazer. She seemed to like our Impeachment Train campaign t shirts too!
Think of the shirt as a one time investment in restoring legitimacy to this country.
And please donate so we can compete with Peter King’s $4 million. I know no lobbyists or millionaires like Peter King. Small donations are the engine of the Mike Sax NY2 campaign. Together we can do it. Because we must.
