With all the concern about Trump’s propensity for authoritarianism, McConnell took a page out of Trump’s book last night in literally telling a US Senator-Elizabeth Warren she’s not allowed to speak about Jeff Sessions.
“Senate Republicans passed a party-line rebuke Tuesday night of Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) for a speech opposing attorney general nominee Jeff Sessions, striking down her words for impugning the Alabama senator’s character.”
“In an extraordinarily rare move, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) interrupted Warren’s speech, in a near-empty chamber as debate on Sessions’s nomination heads toward a Wednesday evening vote, and said that she had breached Senate rules by reading past statements against Sessions from figures such as the late senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) and the late Coretta Scott King.”
“The senator has impugned the motives and conduct of our colleague from Alabama,” McConnell said, then setting up a series of roll-call votes on Warren’s conduct.”
Everyday McConnell and his GOP friends reach a new low.
Senate GOP argument: if a Senator is up for cabinet nomination, any flaws in his/her record can't be discussed on the senate floor. Really.

They can be as long as mentioning these flaws don’t somehow ‘impugn their character.’ So now Corretta Scott King’s words are inappropriate on the Senate floor 52 years after her and her husband and many other activists risked life and limb to secure the vote.
Of course McConnell is a partisan thug. But he might have picked his battle better than the words of the wife of MLK. Already this lead to a firestorm.
“Senator Warren was giving a lengthy speech,” McConnell said. “She had appeared to violate the rule. She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.”
“But almost instantly, social media propelled the episode into a national storyline. The hashtag #LetLizSpeak began trending on Twitter. And a Facebook Live video of Warren reading King’s letter again — this time, from outside the Senate chamber — rapidly amassed 1.9 million views as of midnight Wednesday.”
“Senate Democrats tried to allow Warren to finish speaking against Sessions, using a motion to permit the Massachusetts senator to proceed. But that was, again, denied by Republican senators.”
“The suggestion that reciting the words of the great Coretta Scott King would invoke Rule 19 and force Senator Warren to sit down and be silenced is outrageous,” Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) said.
Here is Coretta Scott King’s entire speech which has gone viral.

Oliver Willis sums it up nicely:
the republican party censored coretta scott king's words to protect a bigoted southerner. during black history month.
