NY Republican Chris Collins is Living in a Dream World
He wants everyone to ‘just move on’ form the Flynn revelations. Nothing to see here. Let’s talk about our plan to gut Obamacare-as if that isn’t also very unpopular with the public.
“Collins, speaking to CNN’s Chris Cuomo, praised Flynn as a “great American” who is “very loyal to President Trump” on Tuesday and said he is sorry to see him go, and then argued for putting the controversy aside.”
“He has stepped down, something obviously he felt was in the best interest of this country. I certainly respect that,” Collins said. “We move on from here. I’m not going to be one, nor would I hope others would dwell on the situation or pile on, to use another term. I think it’s just time to move on and find the replacement.”
Collins also signaled his confidence that Flynn was not discussing the sanctions with Russia at the direction of others at the White House: “I absolutely believe it begins and ends with Gen. Flynn,” he said.
Uh, sure. That’s why Flynn not only wasn’t fired but according to Kellyann Conway-who is to be sure none too reliable a source as if anyone in the Trump WH is-claimed that Flynn continued to receive classified briefings right through till yesterday. If he went rogue on these five calls to the Russian envoy the day Obama imposed the sanctions, this didn’t seem to worry the White House too much.
Despite the attempts of Collins-as well as Ryan and earlier at least, Jason Chaffetz-to put on a happy face and play the usual GOP game on Trump of ‘Hear no evil, see no evil’ this is not sustainable.
Again, these guys really think we were born yesterday:
“Cuomo was skeptical of Collins’ lack of skepticism. On his plea to move on, Cuomo said, “there is zero chance that we are going to move on until answers to the questions that present themselves at least get notice from the White House.”
“Cuomo also questioned why other Republican leaders, like House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, had not spoken out about it already, to which Collins suggested that they may have been eating breakfast with their wives for Valentine’s Day.”
Sure that’s it. They’re eating Valentine’s Day breakfast and didn’t even hear a word about Flynn. Next you’re going to offer me a subscription to Trump University.
Already more GOP Senators are admitting we need to know a lot more.
A growing number of Senate Republicans want more scrutiny of ex-national security adviser Michael Flynn’s talks with Russia, echoing Democrats and raising new pressure on the White House.
“The GOP remains largely united in quashing Democrats’ insistence on an independent probe of the Trump administration’s relationship with Moscow, and House Republican leaders offered deference to the president on Tuesday — urging Washington to move beyond Flynn’s resignation. But several Republican senators pressed for a deeper look into Flynn’s actions, suggesting Congress could call him to testify as well as examine the transcripts of his calls with the Russian ambassador.”
“I know there’s mounting frustration at the pace of” existing investigations into Russia’s election-year meddling, Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) told reporters. “I’m open to looking at a way to make sure all of us and the American people understand everything that’s occurred relative to their nefarious activities.”
Corker also left the door open to supporting an independent commission to review Russia’s disruptive activity, calling for “a fulsome investigation into all angles” of the issue and acknowledging that Flynn’s resignation sparked “a desire for this to happen at a quickened pace.”
Meanwhile-if you can believe it-Jason Chaffetz is now calling for some actual oversight regarding Trump’s very public national security discussions at Margo Lago.
“House oversight committee chairman Jason Chaffetz is pressing White House officials for details on why President Donald Trump conducted some of his response to a North Korean missile test in a public dining room at his Mar-a-Lago club.”
“In a letter to White House chief of staff Reince Priebus, Chaffetz requested answers about security protocols at Mar-a-Lago; the details of potentially sensitive documents that Trump and his aides perused in the presence of diners and waitstaff; and whether any sensitive material was discussed in public. The Utah Republican is also seeking information about whether guests are vetted to “ensure that they are not foreign agents or spies on behalf of a foreign government.”
“White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Tuesday that no classified material was discussed in public, and that Trump was briefed in a secure location both before and after his dinner. But Chaffetz said that assurance may not be enough.”
“‘[D]iscussions with foreign leaders regarding international missile tests, and documents used to support those discussions, are presumptively sensitive,” the Utah Republican wrote. “While the President is always on duty, and cannot dictate the timing of when he needs to receive sensitive information about urgent matters, we hope the White House will cooperate in providing the Committee with additional information.”
Sorry, Congressman Collins, the only way to ‘move on’ is to get to the bottom of exactly what is going on.
