Mass Deportations are Here
Some on the Right try to argue that while there are indeed worrisome aspects about Trump the liberal Resistance overstates the problem-and somehow thereby helps Trump. Right in opposing Trump, in resisting Trump we’re ‘playing right into Donald Trump’s hands.’
When anti anti Trump conservatives say this I always ask them about the historical corollary: where there people who opposed Hitler too stridently thereby playing right into his hands. There’s the rub. They believe that it’s self evident that Trump is not Hitler and perhaps because they think it’s self evident they don’t explain why it’s self evident.
There are a number of disquieting similarities right down to Trump’s strange reluctance to criticize the rise in anti Semitic threats and hate crimes. He did do so yesterday but only after a lot of hemming and hawing.
Trump is not exactly Hitler in the sense that America 2017 is far from Germany 1933. But that doesn’t mean that Trump isn’t pushing in that direction.
And we need to not wait for Trump to start his version of the pogroms. Trump ran on mass deportations and they are happening as we speak. It’s happening now. No need to wait and see if Trump turns out to do mass deportations, he’s already doing it.
“Here are the takeaways from new deportation rules announced Tuesday by the Department of Homeland Security: Many more immigrants can be deported; they may be taken to detention centers; and Mexico could be the most impacted by a rise in deportations. The policies take a broader view on immigration enforcement and could lead to a sharp uptick in detentions or deportations. While President Donald Trump‘s latest immigration crackdown says people who entered the U.S. as children will remain protected under the expanded deportation policy, there have already been cases of detention of immigrants whom Trump said would not be targeted.”
Trump’s version of the Gestapo is ICE whose border agents are already acting like a rogue force. After a federal court told them to walk back aspects of Trump’s Muslim ban, they at least initially refused to, even ignoring Democratic Congressmen who met them at airports.
The ICE agents clearly feel empowered by ‘Mr. Trump.’ When they were asked what they were doing they responded ‘Speak to Mr. Trump.’
They even reportedly demanded that visa holders answer questions about their views on ‘Mr. Trump.’
It’s happening now folks.
“The two memos at the center of the conversation detail how the DHS will execute the president’s executive orders on immigration and border security. One memo signed by Secretary John Kelly says it will prioritize deporting “removable aliens” who may have committed a crime — even if they haven’t been convicted. It gives department officials discretion to deport others who have “abused” any public benefit program or whom the officials deem a threat to public safety or national security, generally encouraging removing anyone who is in the United States illegally. The memo also says DHS will hire 10,000 additional immigration officers to assist in deportation efforts.”
“A second memo encourages more stringent detention of people who have entered, or are trying to enter, the country illegally. Despite a campaign promise from Trump to not use detention centers, DHS plans to do just that — including building more facilities to house people whose immigration status is pending. Those deported from the U.S. after crossing a land border will be returned to “the territory from which they arrived” rather than their nation of origin. In many cases, Mexico will be expected to receive deported immigrants from the U.S. — even if those immigrants are not Mexican citizens.”
“Meanwhile, a new executive order on immigration is imminent. CNN reported that this time around, the White House counsel had a meaningful role in drafting the language to ensure it complies with federal law. Trump’s first immigration order, known as the “Muslim ban” because it targeted people from seven majority-Muslim countries, was struck down by two federal courts; the administration declined to appeal those decisions to the Supreme Court. This new order is expected to maintain a hold on travel and immigration from those seven nations, but it will not target people with existing green cards or visas from those countries.”
Despicable that this is being done in our names. Greg Sargent:
“TRUMP HASN’T SAID HOW HE’LL FUND MASS DEPORTATIONS: The New York Times’s overview of Trump’s expanded deportations policy observes:
Mr. Trump has not yet said where he will get the billions of dollars needed to pay for thousands of new border control agents…But politically, [the actions] serve to reinforce the president’s standing among a core constituency — those who blame unauthorized immigrants for taking jobs away from citizens, committing heinous crimes and being a financial burden on federal, state and local governments.
“This is now on congressional Republicans, and it’s not clear that this is worth the money. But Trump has shown his “core constituency” that he’s getting tough, so who cares about the details?”
It clearly isn’t worth the money when you remember that net Mexican immigration is now negative.
This is yet another reason we must have a Democratic House in 2018. To shut off the ICE spigot. They can’t enforce Trump’s vile policies if the money is cut off.
