Litmus Test Leftism in Action
Yesterday I criticized what I call ‘Litmus Test Leftism’, which is where there’s a checklist of what True Progressives believe and if you deviate on any of the Theses you’ve shown yourself to not be a True Progressive.
You know, if you don’t call for a total and complete ban of fracking in the country today or a $15 federal MW today or banning all ‘corporate donors’ today then you’re not a True Progressive and are not serious. Or maybe as Susan Sarandon sanctimoniously puts it ‘You’re happy with the status quo.’
Of course, as Hannah Arednt warned us, one of the pillars of totalitarianism is blanket rejection of the status quo. One of the big lies of the 2016 campaign was there was simply nothing worse in the world than the ‘current status quo.’ This was a lie. True we were not living in the best of times but it was also far from the worst.
The Berner Left played with this dangerous illusion but ultimately Trump and Breitbart were the ones empowered by it.
It’s like what President Obama always said: Democrats don’t have to agree with each other 100% as Litmus Test leftists believe, 90-95% is enough.
For some of these Litmus Test leftists the new hill to die on was for DNC chairman. They insisted that only Keith Ellison is a True Progressive and if you’re a True Progressive you simply must pick him or it’s #Demexit time. I knew some people talking #Demexit during the general. Last I saw them they were celebrating Trump’s win on November 8. Literally. I then blocked them after pointing out that they had proved what we’d warned about them all along.
Deray McKesson dealt with a Litmus Test leftist in action yesterday after Perez’s win.
@deray Just observing how the you went from "revolution" to establishment politics, in a rather short time.

Ah, you got me. Because I support someone you don't like, I must have shed all commitment to struggle. You got me. https://t.co/xUf0Yvo6lt

By the way, for a long time McKesson has struck me as one of the most hopeful among the young BLM activists. Unlike some, he doesn’t act as if electoral politics don’t matter or that only local activism matters.
If you supported Ellison-and he is a great guy and would have been a great chairman-this is what you have to say now.
I backed Ellison, but have never seen Tom Perez as anything but a great alternative. DNC Chair is a super-bureaucratic job. Perfect for him. https://t.co/IDomnEQuVJ

If you’re not, then you have the wrong priorities. Al Franken said it best.

If you really care about the future of this country the #Resistance cannot wait. We have an American Hitler who as we speak is using ICE agents-who just happened to endorse him; their first endorsement ever-as his own Gestapo agents. They even went after Muhammed Ali’s son.
The last thing we need now is a pointless sectarian food fight over who’s the True Progressive. We have a DNC chairman and he’s very qualified. Keith Ellison will be his deputy. Ellison put it best: we don’t have the luxury of leaving here divided.
Let’s get to work.
P.S. If you enjoy my blog and my support of #TheResistance-I’m also considering a 2018 run against GOP Congressmen Peter King of the NY 2nd district-then please consider a donation.
