Devin Nunes is the Wrong Man to Lead Trump-Russia Investigation
Why? He’s already made up his mind. He says he’s worried about ‘witch hunts.’ This from the partyof Benghazi, of McCarthy, of Whitewater. This is a party who once investigated the Clinton Christmas list for 140 Congressional hours in the 1990s. They’re worried about McCarthyism.
“House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes denied on Monday morning that there was any evidence from the intelligence community of contacts between Trump campaign officials and Russian operatives.”
“As of right now, I don’t have any evidence of any phone calls. It doesn’t mean they don’t exist. . . . What I’ve been told by many folks is that there’s nothing there,” Nunes (R-Calif.) said.
“At this time, I want to be very careful that we can’t just go on a witch hunt against Americans because they appear in news stories,” Nunes said.
He makes it sound like he’s worried about a rush to judgment. Yet it’s he who has rushed to judgment. He doesn’t see any evidence of phone calls though ‘I’m not saying they don’t exist.’
Uh, isn’t that what the investigation is supposed to determine? And he’s been told by ‘many people’ there’s nothing there?
Who are these people? Sean Spicer? Reince Priebus? Stephen Miller? Do any of these people not work for Donald Trump?
His attitude is exactly why people don’t trust him to hold adequate, effective hearings. He makes it sound like he’s already decided. He’s also carrying the water on Trump’s Jihad against leaks.
“Nunes contended there was no need at this time for a special prosecutor to investigate allegations of contact between Russian officials and Trump campaign aides. Instead, the Republican said that the “major crimes” that have been committed are leaking to the news media on the subject of Russia, as well as other accounts of what should be confidential dealings with the Trump White House, including calls with foreign leaders like the Australian prime minister.”
“There’s been major crimes committed,” Nunes said, referring to the leaks. “What I’m concerned about is no one is focusing on major leaks that have occurred here. . . . We can’t run a government like this. A government can’t function with massive leaks at the highest level.”
So he doesn’t want to rush to judgement on Trump-Russia but he’s ready for an immediate witch hunt into leaks. Good thinking. This worked so well for Nixon and G. Gordon Liddy.
His attack on leaks is particularly rich in light of he himself at the request of Reince Priebus and Sean Spicer giving assurances to reporters on background that there’s nothing to the story that members of Trump’s campaign spoke to Russia before the election.
Nunes is also willing-prior to any investigation-to piously declare Michael Flynn did nothing wrong:
“Nunes said we should be thanking Flynn for his service to the country and that the retired lieutenant general was only trying to prepare a new president for office. He said he has not seen the transcripts of Flynn’s call with the Russian ambassador, which would have been “illegally leaked” if he had.”
“He described Flynn as having done a “big favor” by “keeping lines of communication” open with Russia after President Barack Obama expelledRussian officials from the United States in response to allegations that country interfered in the U.S. elections.”
“Nunes said we should “be thanking” Flynn and “not going after him.”
“Nunes also took issue with the definition of sanctions — which were imposed on Russia in 2014 for the annexation of Crimea and Russia’s involvement in Ukraine — saying that in his view, Flynn was not discussing official sanctions in his conversations with Kislyak but rather the “petty” retaliation against such officials by Obama.”
Interesting. So he considers it ‘petty’ to punish Russia for interfering in our elections. Yet, Nunue has the necessary open mind to administer a full and comprehensive investigation of Trump-Russia? Sounds like he’s already decided there’s nothing to see here.
As Obama’s campaign manager says:
The individual that runs against Devin Nunes in 2018 is going to have no problem raising money or recruiting volunteers
