Jeff Sessions: I Will Recuse Myself if Necessary
In the last post we saw that top House GOPers Jason Chaffetz and Kevin McCarthy are calling on him to recuse himself. Sessions himself says he’ll do it ‘if necessary.’
How could it not be necessary?
“Attorney General Jeff Sessions denied meeting with any Russian officials during the course of the presidential election to talk about the Trump campaign, he told NBC News in exclusive remarks early Thursday.”
“I have not met with any Russians at any time to discuss any political campaign,” he said, “and those remarks are unbelievable to me and are false. And I don’t have anything else to say about that.”
“When asked about the calls by Democrats to recuse himself from investigating any alleged ties between Trump’s surrogates and intermediaries for the Russian government, Sessions added: “I have said whenever it’s appropriate, I will recuse myself. There’s no doubt about that.”
That’s good to hear because it’s appropriate.
Meanwhile Sessions non denial denials are falling apart:
“Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s spokeswoman released a statement late Wednesday after The Washington Post reported Sessions had spoken twice with Russia’s ambassador last year — contacts he failed to disclose in his confirmation hearings.”
“I never met with any Russian officials to discuss the issues of the campaign,” Sessions said. “I have no idea what this allegation is about. It is false.”
“This is a remarkably misleading non-denial denial. Sessions, in the course of three sentences, manufactures a straw man, props him up and then knocks him down. He is denying a report that doesn’t exist.”
“The fact is The Post never reported that Sessions and the Russian ambassador discussed “issues of the campaign.” The report was that he met with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, period — apparently despite the Trump campaign’s repeated denials of contact with Russian officials and despite Sessions’s own apparent denials during his confirmation hearings.”
“It’s a statement that suggests Sessions is on his heels and needs to obfuscate. But just how much trouble is he in?”
This is a point Seth Abramson has made. Trump acts like a guilty person. As do the people who work for him.
Indeed, anyone who works for Herr Trump is taking a real risk. Nixon never went to jail but all his top lieutenants did.
But guilty people lie. When you’re innocent, the truth is on your side. But Sessions just like Trump makes lots and lots of non denials.
This is just five weeks in. How is this sustainable for four years?
