Will the Congress Have to Subpoena James Comey?
He still is not even admitting whether or not there is an investigation. With Emailgate it was show and tell time. Press conferences, letters within 11 days of the election that were totally vague and yet changed the result of the election.
But with Russiagate, Comey still can’t even admit whether or not there even is an investigation. They don’t call the FBI Trumpland for nothing.
“The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee on Thursday accused FBI Director James Comey of withholding crucial information about its probe into Russian interference in the election and raised the prospect of subpoenaing the agency.”
“I would say at this point we know less than a fraction of what the FBI knows,” Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) told reporters after a briefing with Comey.
“I appreciate we had a long briefing and testimony from the director today, but in order for us to do our investigation in a thorough and credible way, we’re gonna need the FBI to fully cooperate, to be willing to tell us the length and breadth of any counterintelligence investigations they are conducting,” Schiff said. “At this point, the director was not willing to do that.”
It seems the Trump WH thinks Comey is on their side-as shown by Spicer attempting to get them to knock down stories of the Trump campaign and Russian intel officers.
Gee, what could give them this idea other than Comey’s letter won it for them and Comey was willing to let them use him as anonymous source to knock down a NY Times piece and is slow walking this investigation even in front of Congress?
“Schiff described the House panel’s investigation as “among the most serious that we’ve ever done” but argued that the committee can’t thoroughly do its job if the Justice Department or FBI “is unwilling to tell us what indeed they looked at, what leads they have followed, where they have found substance and where they have not.”
“I’m disappointed we didn’t have that briefing today,” he said.
“During the briefing, Schiff said, Comey faced “repeated questions about the scope of any investigation they were doing” and “individuals that may be the subject of any counterterrorism investigation.”
“The director declined to answer those questions,” Schiff said.
Schiff also argues the DOJ could be preventing the FBI from being more forthcoming.
“Schiff raised the prospect that it could have been Sessions’ Justice Department that advised Comey to be less than forthcoming. “It was unclear whether that decision was a decision he was making on his own or a decision that he is making in consultation with the Department of Justice,” he said.
“An FBI spokeswoman declined to comment on Schiff’s allegations.”
Devon Nunes continues to inspire no confidence that he can run a real investigation-as he seems to have already made up his mind.
“Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), who chairs the committee, maintained that there is no evidence of contacts between Trump associates and Russian officials, aside from former national security adviser Michael Flynn’s call to the Russian ambassador before Trump was sworn in.”
“But, as I’ve said, I read about this in the newspaper, and I see some of you talking about it,” Nunes said. “If you have those names, of those people, if you wanna come forward as a whistleblower and bring those to us, we would greatly appreciate it because we would like to have those names, bring those people in, but we need some credible evidence in order to do that.”
Aside from Flynn, Michael Cohen, and now Jeff Sessions. And Roger Stone did speak through an intermediary about hacking Hillary Clinton’s server as well as the release of the Podesta emails.
Nunes seems not to realize that an investigation is about connecting the dots and putting together the evidence. As the FBI is not even admitting wether or not there even is an investigation, how is is possible to say wether or not there is enough evidence?
By the way, this should not be a partisan issue. It’s about having a real investigation wherever it leads-wether it’s exculpatory or implicating. Lindsay Graham-who does want a real investigation is also criticizing the FBI for not saying wether they are or not investigating Trump-Russia.
“Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Thursday said he will seek answers from FBI Director James Comey on whether the bureau is probing connections between the Trump campaign and Russia.”
“If there is an investigation at the FBI about Trump, Russia campaign actives, I want to know about it,” Graham told reporters.”
“I’m tired of reading about it in the paper. The FBI needs to let us know if there is or there isn’t. If there’s not one, they need to come forward and say so.”
“Somebody is leaking this crap, and it’s putting people like me in a terrible spot,” Graham added.
Graham said he was meeting with Comey on Thursday and would demand answers from the FBI director.
“I’m going to look him in the eye, and he’s going to tell me there’s an investigation or there’s not,” he said. “And if he doesn’t tell, he’s going to have a hard time.”
“Graham declined to say whether he was meeting Comey on Capitol Hill or going to the FBI.”
That’s exactly what is needed. There either is or isn’t one. But there is no way to investigate this properly if Comey won’t even admit that.
UPDATE: Sessions is recusing himself.
“Attorney General Jeff Sessions will recuse himself from any investigations related to the 2016 presidential campaign, including any Russian interference, officials said Thursday.”
“The announcement comes a day after The Washington Post revealed that Sessions twice met with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and did not disclose that fact to Congress during his confirmation hearing.”
