Roger Stone: I’m a Brand Name When it Comes to Dirty Tricks
I’ve said it before but it must be taken to heart. If we are ever to get to the bottom of the subversion at the heart of the 2016 election:
1. Never underestimate Roger Stone.
In addition to that
2. Never underestimate Louise Mensch-who has gotten so much right about this no matter how much others have derided her as a conspiracy nut.
3. Finally, Anthony Weiner was setup. He was honeypotted, catfished, etc. It’s really rather amazing. One sexist line out in January, 2016 was that Trump was going to destroy Hillary Clinton by talking about Bill Clinton’s sex life.
But it was not her husband behaving badly which finally sunk her but Anthony Weiner behaving badly. To be sure, Anthony Weiner is just incredibly unlucky.
There was a time when male politicians-almost all of them were males back then-could engage in serial affairs and the-again almost all male-media would keep that under their hats. Democrats didn’t go after GOP philanderers or vice versa as they knew they all live in a glass house.
Then came the 1990s where a number of factors changed the game. The GOP was so blinded by partisan zeal and hatred of Bill Clinton they very selectively violated the old Gentleman’s agreement. The media too-perhaps partly by having more women in the media?-also changed. Now it saw a man’s private life as ‘fair game.’
They beat Bill Clinton up a lot-partly as payback for Watergate. But try as they might, the public never bought it. Yes, maybe Clinton’s private behavior was despicable. But it was a private matter not a matter of public interest. So Bill survived. Still, he and Hillary got beat up a lot and by her run in 2016 a lot of this accumulated incoming weighed her down.
Yet it was Anthony Weiner’s sordid peccadillos and not her husband’d who ultimately took her down. As Men Behaving Badly go, Weiner’s an utterly pathetic character. JFK, LBJ, and Nixon were never called on it, Clinton survived it. Weiner on the other hand had no sex-just virtual masturbation-and first Breitbart and friends use this to destroy his career, then his marriage, and finally Hillary Clinton’s career.
And Roger Stone was embroiled in this-as he is everywhere. Again, don’t underestimate Roger Stone. He was instrumental in the demise of Weiner just like he coordinated with Assange.
“It should be noted that the takeout of Spitzer was led by Roger Stone, who just so happens to be very close to Donald Trump and close to The New York Post. The Post led the way in the reporting of the Spitzer scandal. Roger is a master, never underestimate Roger.”
But here is Roger Stone in his own words after Ted Cruz called him one of Trump’s henchman:
“Look, I’m a brand name when it comes to dirty tricks,” Stone said. “He called me a henchman, and I don’t really object to that, but henchmen get paid, and I have been paid nothing by Trump.”
There’s no question, though, Stone is a sort of Evil Genius of Dirty Tricks.
According to journalist Marc Ames, a longtime Stone-watcher, the mainstays of the Trump-Stone alliance are three:
- Roger Stone’s dirty tricks specialty is manipulating vote fractures, and weaponizing anti-establishment politics to serve the electoral needs of mainstream Republican candidates.
- Roger Stone and Donald Trump have been working together since the mid-1980s, mostly on sleazy campaigns to help Trump’s casino business, but also in politics.
- Roger Stone and Donald Trump worked together in at least two major “black bag” operations manipulating anti-establishment politics to help the mainstream Republican presidential candidate.
Number one is key. It’s what Nixon, David Segretti, and Pat Buchanan did in 1972. Who knows if not for that nasty hit piece on Ed Muskie’s wife, the 1972 election may have gone very differently.
Every time Buchanan comes out against affirmative action it’s a another moment of dissonance-as he wrote the Philadelphia Plan.
And does anything sum up Donald Trump’s entire campaign if not 1? Every time Trump name checks Bernie yet again, just remember 1.
Stone was also behind the Brooks Brothers riots to boot:
“Four years earlier, during the contentious 2000 election, Stone played a role in convincing Trump to run as a Reform Party candidate against Pat Buchanan, who was threatening to take votes away from establishment Republican candidate George W. Bush. Ames writes that Trump ran as a Reform Party candidate “only to drop out of the race, and attack Buchanan’s Reform Party as a cesspool full of Hitler lovers and racists”—an interesting line of attack from a man who currently has the support of white-supremacist and former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke.”
“Later that year, Stone, who calls himself “the GOP hitman,” spearheaded the Brooks Brothers riot that thwarted Florida’s ballot recount. By his account, Stone managed to rally right-wing protesters to assemble outside a voting center in Miami-Dade—a diverse county sympathetic to Gore. “The idea we were putting out there was that this was a left-wing power grab by Gore, the same way Fidel Castro did it in Cuba. We were very explicitly drawing that analogy,” Stone recalled. “The idea was to shut it down, stop the recount here in Miami.”
“The scheme worked. The crowd eventually rioted inside the voting center while ballots were being counted. According to the New York Times, “several people were trampled, punched or kicked when protesters tried to rush the doors outside the office of the Miami-Dade supervisor of elections. Sheriff’s deputies restored order.”
This is very similar to the Watergate break in where Cuban anti Communists were also employed. Yes, never underestimate Roger Stone.
