James Comey Still Won’t Even Say if There’s an Investigation
David Frum was on Lawrence O’Donnell last night and argued that Democrats may be going down a rabbit hole in pursuing Jeff Sessions as Frum doesn’t think Sessions was on of the Trumpsters-like Michael Flynn, Michael Cohen, or Paul Manafort, etc.
Maybe, maybe not. He argued that Sessions-while he did make a false statement about talking to Russia-just lied because he saw this is a bad story.
Ok. Let’s say that’s true. Sessions himself is not one of the Trump officials who might have coordinated with Russia during the campaign. He spoke to Russia-clearly but stuff that was not campaign related.
The question that begs then is: even if true how can he be trusted as AG? If he was willing to mislead Congress to save himself some embarrassment maybe he misleads them again as AG when he tells Comey and the FBI not to tell Congress everything they know about Trump and Russia.
What is clear is that James Comey is not cooperating with the Trump-Russia investigation. The question is why? Could Jeff Sessions be telling him not to? Well, we don’t know. But what is beyond question is that he is not cooperating:
“Rep. Schiff accuses Comey of withholding information on Russia probe.”
“The ranking member on the House intelligence panel warns that lawmakers may have to subpoena the FBI.”
You also have a major Republican, Lindsay Graham, complaining about Comey.
“Graham said earlier that he wanted to find out whether or not there is an investigation of inappropriate contact between Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and Russian entities.”
“I am tired of reading about innuendo,” the South Carolina Republican said Thursday. “Somebody is leaking this crap, and it’s putting people like me in a terrible spot. So, I’m going to meet with the FBI director today, and I’m going to look him in the eye and he’s going to tell me there’s an investigation or there’s not.”
“And if he doesn’t tell me, he’s going to have a hard time,” Graham added.
Graham makes a fair point. How can you have an investigation on inappropriate contact between Trump and Russia when Comey won’t even say wether the FBI is running such an investigation or it’s not?
Let’s face it, you don’t need Jeff Sessions to explain Comey’s conduct. Comey’s letter is what won the election for Trump in the first place. Without the Comey letter, Hillary wins.
Comey, who gave a press conference about the emails and wrote a letter of pure speculations 11 days before the election which nevertheless changed its outcome now won’t even say if there’s an investigation or there isn’t one.
So you have GOPers like Devon Nunes and Richard Burr-who allegedly are leading these investigations-saying ‘There’s nothing there, that’s what everyone I talk to tells me’ while there has been on investigation yet. Comey won’t even say if there’s an investigation-which is a good sign there is.
You’d think with his track record he’d want to show that he’s not in Trump’s back pocket. So far, you’d be wrong.
This is why while there must be a real investigation of Russia, there must also be a real investigation of Comey and his conduct during both the email investigation and the Russia investigation. It must also investigate the FBI, including the NY FBI-aka Trumpland.
Any decent novelist would insist on a tie between Russia and the Comey letter. Louis Mensch gives us one.
Remember the original Watergate was not about just one thing. It was named after the break where they broke into the DNC but there were a lot of different Watergate investigations-stuff as puerile as ordering lots of pizzas at Ed Muskie rallies and planting false information.
Muskie was taken out in much the way that Howard Dean was 32 years later. It was the Nixon-Pat Buchanan Fourth Party strategy. In 1972 Nixon paid African-Americans-out of campaign funds-to protest Muskie and embroil him in controversies that suggested he was a racist.
This led to a fallacious NH newspaper story. Muskie was accused of having a mental breakdown-of bursting out crying-but in truth he was simply angry at the Nixon tactics and in the rain while he was speaking. Years later, Roger Stone paid Al Sharpton to run against Howard Dean and accuse him of being a racist and then there was the famous ‘whoop’ heard around the world and Dean was toast.
Similarly with Watergate 2.0. It too is centered around another break in at the DNC. This break in was more successful as it was cyber and led to Debbie Wasserman-Schultz having to step down-even though there was nothing in the emails that in any way implicated her.
But the most successful part of Watergate 2.0 was the Comey letter.
P.S. If you enjoy my blog and my support of #TheResistance-I’m also considering a 2018 run against GOP Congressmen Peter King of the NY 2nd district-then please consider a donation.
I just paid for the first poll of Peter King and how his constituents feel about him being a rubber stamp for Herr Trump.
Basically I ask them: ‘Peter King supports Trump’s Muslim ban and mass immigration raids and Mike Sax opposes them. Based on this who are you more likely to support?’
‘Like Donald Trump and Paul Ryan, Peter King supports ending ACA and cutting Medicaid. Mike Sax doesn’t want to end ACA but strengthen it. Not cut Medicaid but expand it. Based on this who are you more likely to support?’
‘Peter King like the rest of the GOP leadership doesn’t want real hearings into Donald Trump’s coordination with Russia during the election. Mike Sax wants real hearings which must be public. Based on this who are you more likely to support?’
‘Peter King thinks that Donald Trump unlike Presidents the last 40 years doesn’t have to release his tax returns to the public. Mike Sax believes Congress must compel the IRS to release them if Trump won’t. Based on this, who are you more likely to support?’
A number of people expressed interest in my run. Some pointed out they don’t live in NY. True, though you can still donate if that’s the case! Even $5 goes a long way.
