New CNN Poll: 65% Want Special Prosecutor
Dan Balz got it right yesterday:
“Russia has become the slow burn of President Trump’s administration. It is the issue that he and his team cannot get beyond. They cannot get beyond it because they are skittish about accepting what is already known. They cannot get beyond it because they have not been as forthcoming as they could be about what they did. They cannot get beyond it because they don’t know what they don’t know.”
“It’s important to remember that much isn’t yet known about the whole controversy, particularly the contacts between Trump campaign officials or advisers and the Russians. That there were contacts is not in dispute. Some appear routine, but the circumstances and the content of all those contacts is far from fully known. It’s possible they will add up to little or nothing. It’s also possible they will add up to something significant.”
Sometimes Trump defenders say things like ‘What’s wrong with meeting with the Ambassador?’ Trump played a game on Friday: Nancy Pelosi with the Russian envoy in 2010! Chuck Schumer in 2003.
A few problems:
1. For one thing they underscore how infrequent the meetings with the Russian Ambassador and Putin actually are for Pelosi/Schumer. So Schumer ate ice cream in a photo op with Putin back in 2003? That’s almost 15 years ago. You have to go back nearly 15 years for your false analogy.
Pelosi was in the same room as the Russian envoy in 2010-with other members of both parties? Exactly. You have to go back seven years. Trump’s people for some reason speak to the Russian envoy constantly. Five times in one day. He was the the RNC when the GOP changed the platform to very favorable terms for Russia.
2. But it misses the larger context. It’s all well and good to say ‘Why can’t we meet with the Russian Ambassador?’ or ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to be better friends with Russia?’ but this abstracts from the larger context.
All 17 of our intel agencies say Russia interfered with the express purpose of helping one candidate-Trump-at the expense of another-Hillary Clinton. And Russia’s candidate won. The Manchurian Candidate won.
We have a Senate Intelligence panel looking at the question of whether there was coordination with the Trump campaign on Russian interference.
In this context every conversation between the Trump team and Russia becomes significant as we’re trying to ascertain whether or not there was collusion.
You have to go back seven years for Pelosi and the Russian envoy but Michael Flynn spoke to the envoy constantly even before the election.
All this handwaving-Trump saying ‘Russia’s a ruse’-Devon Nunes saying ‘Everyone I talk to says there’s nothing there-is not working.
By the way, if Nunes is talking to people saying there’s nothing there, who are these people? I thought he was against anonymous sources? Are any of these people not working for the Trump campaign?
Again, it’s not working. The American people want a Special Prosecutor:
“Despite claims from the White House that no such ties exist, 65 percent of respondents to a new CNN/ORC poll released Monday morning said the investigation into connections between President Donald Trump and the Russian government should be handled by a special prosecutor.”
“Fifty-five percent of those polled said they were either “very concerned” or “somewhat concerned” by reports of Trump’s connections to Russia, which include Sessions, former national security adviser Michael Flynn, former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and former foreign campaign adviser Carter Page, among others.”
“More than half of the Republicans polled — 54 percent — said they have no concern “at all” about the reported ties to Russia, while 71 percent of Democrats polled said they are “very concerned.” On the question of how the investigation should be handled, 82 percent of Democrats, 67 percent of independents and 43 percent of Republicans polled said it should be conducted by a special prosecutor.”
Those are damning numbers: 67% of independents and even 43% of Republicans. Indeed, Erick Erickson argued that for their own good, the GOP should have an Independent Prosecutor. Otherwise Russiagate will eat up all their time.
Roger Stone himself says there should be a SC-or Congressional hearings.
Stone has been getting very cagey lately though. Whatever could be the matter?
He’s just so sick of this ‘Russia shit’-his words.
Speaking of which, as I’ve told you recently, I’m exploring a run against Peter King for the NY 2nd Congressional District. King is just a rubber stamp for Trump’s Muslim ban and immigration raids as well as Paul Ryan’s plan to takeaway the healthcare of average Americans and give it to fund tax cuts for their rich, GOP friends.
My dream is to win in 2018 on a big Democratic wave. In 2019 we can being hearings. My ultimate fantasy: for yours truly to cross examine Roger Stone.
To make that happen please donate! Even $5 is a big help in the effort.
As we speak, I just approved the poll I’m doing with SurveyUSA. Believe me these polls are not cheap. They say it’s a discount-but $5,000 even if less than it otherwise would be is not cheap! But it’s worth it.
The time for #Resistance is now. The poll should start within 24 hours.
Within about eight days we should have the results.
