Why We Should be Skeptical Sessions Met Russian Envoy in Senate Capacity
Think about this timeline:
“Sessions was neither responsive to Franken’s question nor was he forthcoming about having met with Kislyak, first in passing at the Republican National Convention last July and then for a fuller conversation in September in his Senate office. It was a double error. When the real story came out, he announced that he would recuse himself from any investigation into Russia’s role in the 2016 election.”
It’s pretty clear that when Sessions met with Kislyak at the RNC it was not as a Senator. If there were any doubt we had a Wall Street Journal story that showed Sessions travelled to Cleveland with campaign funds. So there’s no question.
As I noted in an earlier piece, Trump’s attempt to get cute last Friday fell on its face in a crucial respect:
So Schumer ate ice cream in a photo op with Putin back in 2003? That’s almost 15 years ago. You have to go back nearly 15 years for your false analogy.
“Pelosi was in the same room as the Russian envoy in 2010-with other members of both parties? Exactly. You have to go back seven years. Trump’s people for some reason speak to the Russian envoy constantly. Five times in one day. He was the the RNC when the GOP changed the platform to very favorable terms for Russia.”
Trump’s team including during the campaign while Russia was interfering in our election just talks a lot more with Russia than anyone else does. You have to go back 7 years for Pelosi and Kislyak. Michael Flynn speaks to him everyday.
Anyway when Sessions met with Kislyak in Cleveland it was on a campaign basis. What do you think the likelihood is that two months later Kislyak had this great need to speak to a US Senator?
His interest in talking to Sessions at that time was clearly in a campaign context. After all, he’d already spoken with him in such a context back in July.
