Republicans Again Vote Against Releasing Trump’s Tax Returns
NJ Congressman Bill Pacrell has been very vigilant in keeping putting out new bills for them to vote against-again.
— Bill Pascrell, Jr. (@BillPascrell) March 10, 2017
“Pascrell’s action forces the House Ways and Means Committee to act on his request or else allows him to bring a resolution to the House floor.”
“The Republican-controlled committee and its chairman, Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas, previously have rejected Pascrell’s request to get Trump’s returns.”
“I’m a firm believer in the maxim where there’s smoke, there’s fire,” said Pascrell (D-9th Dist.) “The smoke is billowing out of the White House right now. We need to act and we have the power to act. I’m not sure what we’re waiting for.”
“Brady rejected Pascrell’s earlier requests, saying he did not want to “rummage around in the tax returns of the president.”
That the GOP ‘Doesn’t want to rummage around in the tax returns of the president’ is not a surprise. But it’s a feature not a bug. Don’t get me wrong-ideally the GOP would recognize that there is a public interest in seeing Trump’s full tax returns like every single President going back to Nixon has provided.
In addition we have the investigation into whether or not Trump coordinated with Russia’s interference into our election on his behalf. So even more than other Presidents, we need to know where his interests reside. There’s also the more mundane fact of the Emoluments Clause being violated every minute of every hour of every day with this so-called President.
But we know the GOP is going to put party above country.
However, the beauty of it is the GOPers are just giving their challengers in 2018 more ammunition with every vote they take to again shield Donald Trump’s tax returns from the public.
As I onted in my poll yesterday, this is an issue that galvanizes people across the country.Strong majorities of the American people-even sizable numbers of Republicans-believe he should release his tax returns. Incumbent GOPers won’t enjoy explaining their 25 votes to let Trump hide his tax returns from the public.
As I noted in the poll I just conducted against NY Congressman Peter King, the tax return issue is the ultimate political layup. Challengers to GOP incumbents can just demand to know why the GOPer voted 10, 20, 50, times against releasing Donald Trump’s tax returns.
Not to bury the lead, the big find in that poll was that yours truly, as a fairly anonymous NY blogger came within 11 points of the might Peter King who has won 19 straight elections, in 2016 by a 58-36 margin.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
