CNN Poll: Majority Want a Path to Citizenship
That’s got to hurt. Someone make sure there are no open windows when Stephen Bannon and Stephen Miller see that one. Earlier in the week a poll came out that Obamacare crushes Tryancare in popularity with the public.
Now it turns out Americans do want a path to citizenship.
“Six out of 10 Americans reached for a new poll released Friday by CNN said U.S. immigration policy should be geared towards aiding those who are employed and inside the country illegally with obtaining legal status, not deporting them as President Donald Trump has proposed.”
“Sixty percent of those polled said the top priority for the government when it comes to immigration should be “developing a plan to allow those in the U.S. illegally who have jobs to become legal residents.” Twenty-six percent said the U.S. should focus on a plan to stop more undocumented immigrants from crossing the border and 13 percent said the government’s priority should be deporting those who are already here.”
It does seem sometimes as certain ideas get more unpopular after Trump holds them.
Trump in January claimed that no one cared about his tax returns except the media. How did he know that? ‘Because I won’ was his answer. If you win an election then the public must agree with you in lockstep in every issue under the sun.
Meanwhile Trump received 3 million fewer votes and only won the EC because of the Comey letter. In truth there are no mandates in American politics. Take FDR 1936. No one had more right to believe he had been delivered a mandate than he.
After all he won 46 of 48 states and won the EC 523-8. He had 331 Democrats in the House and 76 in the Senate. If that wasn’t a mandate then nothing is. Yet, it turned out not really to be a mandate.
His own party killed his court packing plan-though arguably the gambit was successful as the Four Horses of Reaction on the Supreme Court changed their tune and declared most of the New Deal constitutional in 1937.
By 1938, there was a Southern Democrat wing firmly anti FDR and there was no more political capital for further New Deal initiatives. This is for someone who won a historical landslide and had historic supermajorities in Congress. His mandate proved to be quite limited.
Now Trump who won the minority of the vote and who’s EC victory is tainted and tarnished acts like he has a mandate.
Yet we see how false this is. Large majorities of Americans oppose Tryancare and mass deportations. Takeaway: Trump has no mandate.
P.S. As we saw in my poll out this week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
