Has Devin Nunes Showed Intercepts to Pau Ryan or Revealed Source?
We’re already at the obstruction of justice and the ‘executive privilege’ chapter of Watergate 2.0.
Nunes has taken upon himself to help Donald Trump obstruct justice. But Lawrence O’Donnell emphasized something last night that other media outlets haven’t: it’s not just Nunes obstructing justice but Paul Ryan.
Last Wednesday when he was asked why he didn’t show this phantom material from what has turned out to be a White House source-sources seems to show it’s actually Trump lawyer Michael Ellis-to the other members on the intelligence committee, including ranking Democrat, Adam Schiff he said ‘I had to brief the Speaker first.’
“Devin Nunes, a useful idiot who has no idea how politics works despite having been in Congress for fourteen years, set his career on fire today for no apparent reason. He got his hands on classified Trump-Russia intel through unofficial channels, and instead of following proper channels, he went running to Donald Trump and then to the media. But the real story of the day is who told him to do it: Speaker Paul Ryan.”
Useful idiot, yes, but I wonder how much he actually knows? He was a Trump transition official. He was in a January meeting with Turkey with Michael Flynn-who turned out to be a Turkish agent. I wonder how much in protecting Trump’s ass, Nunes is also protecting his own.
There may be any number of GOP operatives swept up in this. Remember the piece by Maggie Haberman that stated many GOP operatives outside of Roger Stone spoke to Guccifer 2.0.
So maybe-for all we know-Nunes is more than just a useful idiot. He’s a willing and conscious accomplice. The more he flails around on this bizarre caper of his, the more the question begs as to what’s really in this material that he says vindicates Trump yet he refuses to let the other members on the Intelligence Committee see?
But no question, Nunes’ priorities are all wrong. He said he had an obligation to brief Paul Ryan and Donald Trump but not the members of his own Committee. Yet he asks ‘Why would I recuse myself?’ Because you’ve shown yourself to be a GOP hack who can’t be trusted to have a real inquiry?
“Procedurally, as chair of the House Intelligence Committee, Devin Nunes should have taken the information to his committee’s ranking member Adam Schiff. Then they could have jointly taken it to the FBI to verify if it was real. That kind of bipartisanship would give them both cover for however they decided to proceed with it next. Instead, Nunes went running straight to the House leader of his own party, Paul Ryan. This was an inappropriate move, but perhaps he was merely unsure of his footing and he wanted advice from a trusted colleague. But what happened next is the real story.”
“Paul Ryan, who has long cynically demonstrated that he understands how politics and government work, knew full well that the only appropriate advice he could offer Nunes would be to redirect him back to Schiff. Instead, according to various accounts, Ryan made no effort to stop Nunes from running straight to Donald Trump with the evidence. In so doing, Ryan was certainly aware that he was committing obstruction of justice.”
“Ryan sent Nunes to deliver secret evidence in a crucial FBI investigation directly to the subject of that investigation. That’s Obstruction 101. And while Nunes might honestly be too dumb to have understood as much, Ryan knew better. So why did he do it? The only explanation is that Paul Ryan himself is a conspirator in the Trump-Russia scandal. And that might be the next shoe to drop. Contribute to Palmer Report“
Again, I’m not sure that Nunes himself isn’t a conspirator. As we noted above there may well be a number of GOP operatives mixed up in this at various levels, to varying degrees.
But the question begs: When Nunes ‘briefed Paul Ryan’ on what did he brief him on? He says ‘We’ll never reveal sources and methods.’ Who is this royal ‘We?’ Does Ryan know where it came from? Does Ryan know what’s in the material?
UPDATE: When Kasie Hunt asked him about whether he knew Nunes’ source Ryan gave a very terse one word ‘no.’
Nunes has all the wrong priorities. He thinks he needs to brief Trump and Ryan but not his own Committee members. He obviously needs to step down. That the other House GOPers aren’t demanding this tells us a couple of things:
1. They put party over country even in matters of subversion from a hostile, foreign, power. After calling liberals disloyal for years, we see who doesn’t really love their country-they just love their party.
2. Many GOPers may be implicated at varying levels and to varying degrees and therefore can’t afford a real investigation.
P.S. As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will
