Trump’s Steep Budget Cuts Hit Rural Areas That Voted for Him Especially Hard
As we aw in the last post, Trump is now down to just 34% approval in a new IBD poll.
Meanwhile, his budget kicks his own supporters right in the teeth:
Trump’s budget would hit rural towns especially hard — but they’re willing to trust him.”
Really? We’ll see how long that trust lasts when they make their own lives materially worse.
“Betty Harris, 77, gets choked up when she talks about her husband, who died in May, and her son, who died in February. Her two daughters live in Oklahoma City and visit once a month or so. There are two things that get her to leave her home: a quilting circle with friends and daily visits to the senior center.”
“Harris voted for Barack Obama when he first ran for president in 2008 because she liked his promise of change. But he disappointed her in a number of ways, including, in her eyes, being too sympathetic to Muslims. She voted for Republican Mitt Romney in 2012 and Trump last year.”
“She likes the president’s promises to crack down on illegal immigration, which she thinks has hurt the job market, and to bully manufacturers into staying in the country. She said both of her daughters were out of work for months because they worked for companies that moved overseas.”
“But Harris is upset by the president’s proposed budget, which would dramatically cut funding for the Robert T. Davis Senior Center, managed by the Bryan County Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Harris said she gives each president 10 strikes before she withdraws her support.”
“I have high hopes for Trump, but if he’s going to be cutting these kinds of programs, that’s going to be one,” Harris said. “And we’ll see. I hope I don’t get up to 10, but I will give him one for that.”
That’s interesting as it’s like she is a classic Trump supporter. Willing to actually lose economically in exchange for cracking down on Muslims and Latinos.
We’ll see how long she and others like her can keep up that sort of calculus.
Regarding Trump there is a lot of talk about where Trump is going wrong-34% approval rating, etc.
“Everyone in Washington is trying to figure out why President Trump’s agenda has stalled on multiple fronts and why his approval numbers are swirling down the toilet. CNN’s Chris Cillizza suggests Trump’s penchant for disruption and chaos actually works against him (I agree). Others point to Trump’s failure to forge relationships on Capitol Hill.”
“Still others say the problem is congressional Republicans. Trump’s social media director has called for a primary against a House conservative who opposed Trump’s health plan, which may have violated a law designed to keep government officials from swaying elections. Some GOP groups are reportedly mulling ads targeting GOP lawmakers who don’t vote with Trump. Thus, the problem is their disloyalty.”
“All this has some truth to it. But here’s another overarching reason for Trump’s travails: as his campaign promises are getting translated into concrete policies, Americans are recoiling from the results. What’s more, this process is unmasking the disconcerting levels of dishonesty, bad faith, and lack of concern for detail and procedure that are rotting away at the core of his policies, all of which is plainly working against him.”
Basically his policies are awful, but he was vague and dishonest about them during the campaign and the media let him get away with it because But what about your emails, Secretary Clinton?
If you wanted someone with policy details who knows what she is talking about, that was Hillary.
She had some comments on Trump’s budget on Friday.
“Hillary Clinton blasted the White House’s budget proposal in a Friday speech, warning that cuts to diplomacy and international aid could have devastating effects.”
“We are seeing signals of a shift that should alarm us all,” the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee and former secretary of State said in a speech at Georgetown University.
“This administration’s proposed cuts to international health, development, and diplomacy would be a blow to women and children and a grave mistake to our country.”
Not only is it true, but has the added bonus of driving Trump crazy.
P.S. As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will
