In New Budget Deal Congress is Limiting Trump’s Powers and not a Moment Too Soon
You can spin this deal anyone you want-some pundits actually called it a win for Trump but that’s the opposite of the truth. Trump got nothing in there he wanted.
“And while President Donald Trump can claim victory that the government’s lights will stay on and crucial federal programs will stay funded, it’s Democrats who really came out the winners in the deal. Almost none of Trump’s major budget cuts were included in the deal. Some programs Trump called to be cut received even more funding in the deal than they previously had.”
“It’s a sign both that Republicans are not afraid to defy Trump, and that the GOP still needs Democrats to accomplish basic tasks like funding the government, despite the fact that the GOP holds majorities in both the House and Senate. “
I mean it’s a win for the American people that for once we’re not doing government shutdown chicken. Keeping it funded without any more theatrics is a win for them. It’s also a clear win for the Dems who stood firm on nonsense like a wall or defending Planned Parenthood.
That the GOP needs Democratic votes to even fund the government says it all. Note that this could be a functioning Congress if not for the hyperpartisan Hastert Rule-only something that gets the majority of the majority party makes it to the floor.
There was another provision in the budget that was very much needed: Congress voted to cut back on Trump’s power.
When you consider the latest from ultra billionaire Wilbur Ross, cutting back on Trump’s power comes not a moment too soon.

It was never clear why Ross was at that meeting on launching missiles anyway-he’s the Commerce Secretary. What Ross said was so despicable we need another take:

Just more proof if, this were actually needed, it shouldn’t be needed of just how seriously Trump takes the duties of his job. He seems to like to call military action over dinner. Clearly he takes such life and death matters very seriously.
Now Congress wants to rollback some of Trump’s power as Commander in Chief. Not a moment too soon.
“Congress claws back power from Trump.”
“The budget agreement includes several provisions designed to rein in the president.”
“Congressional members didn’t just snub Donald Trump on his border wall: They also used the $1 trillion spending deal hatched over the weekend to rein in the president’s powers.”
“Lawmakers want the Trump administration to lay out a detailed plan to deal with the Islamic State and Syria’s Bashar Assad. So they tucked in a provision in the 1,665-page spending plan to withhold $2.5 billion in defense funds until the proposal to battle ISIS is produced.”
You go Congress. They also are curbing the power of Jeff Sessions to lead a Holy War on Reefer.
“Because Republicans and Democrats don’t want Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his Justice Department to muck around with states that allow medical marijuana, they included language in the bill barring the anti-pot attorney general from interfering with those laws.”
“The measure also contains three separate reminders for Trump, who did not seek congressional approval before launching missile strikes against the Syrian government last month, that he must obey the War Powers Act. That law limits his ability to send U.S. troops into combat without a congressional vote.”
“It’s an assertion, I think, of Congress’ power to appropriate and to set the tone,” said Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a member of the Appropriations Committee. “I don’t see it as a finger in the eye so much as just a reassertion of our ability to put our own imprint on what’s going on.”
I don’t mind what you want to call it-finger in the eye or putting your own imprint on. Just so glad you did it. I kind of like the sound of finger in the eye…
“Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are always eager to show the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue that they hold significant leverage, regardless of which party controls the White House. Many of the provisions at issue have been included in past measures to constrain the powers of previous administrations, including that of President Barack Obama.”
But they’re taking on new significance in the Trump era and the conservative stances of its top officials.”
This is one of the many ways our system is working. You see all parts of our civil society and government system putting him back in his place. The federal courts have clipped his wings as have the intel agencies, and of course, we ourselves, #TheResistance.
Now Congress is getting into the act.
No wonder he envies dictators like Erdogan and Duterte.
P.S. As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
