GOP Congressional Sources: Chaffetz Could be Gone as Soon as July
Yesterday I wrote about the fact that the GOP has become the party of treason. And it’s not just liberals saying it either, but none other than Steve Schmidt and Mark Stelter-old John McCain alums from his 2008 run.
As I have argued the last few days, John McCain remains the one Republican we should really watch. I maintain that he could be the one to put party over country. That vote with the Democrats to kill CRA was very interesting.
“Senate leaders like Mitch McConnell don’t typically advance votes on legislation unless they know it will pass. The Senate floor is almost never the scene for unexpected activity. So what happened?”
“It may have been Donald Trump’s firing of James Comey.”
“McCain’s conduct during the Senate vote also raises red flags. In the C-SPAN video of the vote, McCain can be seen in heated discussion with John Cornyn, R-Texas, the number two man in the Senate leadership, along with John Barrasso, R-Wyo., and an unidentified senator with his back to the camera. After yelling at them for close to a minute, McCain goes over to the Senate clerks and gives a thumbs down to record his vote. He then storms out of the chamber, as Cornyn raises his arms in mild protest.”
Cornyn is a nonstarter as FBI Director. He’s the number two Republican in the Senate and has spoken dismissively about the furor that as developed over Comey’s firing as if it’s all no big deal and people should talk about something else.
Back to McCain:
“McCain has a reputation for being a little, shall we say, vindictive. It’s not out of the question at all that he would torpedo this vote, regardless of his ideological preferences, because of a fit of pique about the FBI director he admires getting unceremoniously dumped.”
I sort of disagree with this characterization that McCain did it out of mere ‘pique.’ Or I guess we shall see. He may have done it out of genuine concern and as a warning to his GOP Senate leadership that they had better take this seriously and consider a select committee and/or a special prosecutor.
But the party as a whole has become the party of treason-which may be why McCain is now ready to take measures against his own party-let’s see if there are more votes with the Democrats.
After years of accusing us liberals of not loving our own country-remember Jeanne Kirkpatrick 1984 at Reagan’s convention? There are not conservatives and liberals there are only liberals and Americans.
Now we know who’s truly disloyal to their country. Is that too much to say? Consider that there may be a RICO prosecution against the GOP-as a party-itself.
How fitting. It’s not just Trump, the party itself has gotten totally infected with this, implicated in it. This is what comes from putting party over country again and again and again. Mitch McConnell-the most shameful man in America-first put party over country in sabotaging President Obama during the financial crisis and worst recession since the Great Depression.
Now he’s not even ending politics at the water’s edge on Russian subversion of our democracy.
This brings us to Jason Chaffetz. His behavior has been so erratic recently-almost as squirrely as Devin Nunes.
“The past month of Jason Chaffetz’s life has been a series of nonsensical moves, controversies, sudden reversals, and all around suspicious behavior – and now he appears to have settled on his exit strategy. Amid whispers of scandal, Chaffetz abruptly announced he won’t seek reelection. Then he said he was bailing for a month for surgery on a twelve year old foot injury. Then he was back a few days later. But now he has a new claim which points to the exits.”
Chaffetz, who has health insurance for a preexisting foot condition-ObamaCare for me but not for thee-left for foot surgery and returned to vote for taking away our ObamaCare-while keeping it for himself.
“Multiple Republican members of Congress have told the Washingtonian that Jason Chaffetz is telling them he’s planning to resign long before his term is over. Why? He’s planning to take a job at Fox News of all places (link), and he may make the leap as soon as July. This raises even more questions about just what’s really going on with Chaffetz behind the scenes.”
I’ve been skeptical that this is all about Chaffetz running for Governor in 2020 as Bill Palmer reasons the same way I have on this:
“Clearly he’s trying to get out of Congress much sooner than the end of his term, and no one does that without a reason. Some have posited that he’s planning to run for Governor of Utah in 2020. But if that were the case, why would be branding himself a quitter by bailing so early in his term, and handing his future opponent such an easy talking point? And then there are the matters of the buzz of scandal surrounding him, and his utterly bizarre behavior since that buzz started.”
Actually I had seen an article where the domain name Chaffetz 2028 was now taken-which would suggest that Chaffetz sees his time in the wilderness as much longer-unfortunately I can’t remember the source on this one for now.
“Palmer Report has previously reported that the week before Chaffetz announced he won’t seek reelection, there was intel community buzz that he’d been caught up financially in Trump’s Russia scandal (link). Then a former staffer claimed Chaffetz is under FBI investigation (link). And that was before his oddly timed surgery and its month long recovery time which lasted three days. So is Chaffetz really seeking safer ground at Fox News, or is this merely his latest misdirect? This keeps getting stranger.”
There are a lot of rumors and theories swirling around-that may well all have truth in them. I note that while some mocked Claude Taylor for claiming that Chaffetz would be gone by the next day back in April. Ok, he didn’t leave the next day, but did take a leave of absence on a preexisting foot injury the following Monday. Now we’re hearing he may be gone as early as July and he himself has opened the possibility he’s gone before the end of the term.
So does Taylor look worse or those who never saw it coming that Chaffetz would leave before the end of his term?
Clearly the sources he had were in the ballpark. As if the MSM never speaks to sources that turn out to be wrong. Taylor’s sources weren’t entirely wrong just not 100% precise. That’s to be expected.
One story that broke in April is that Trump actually paid a $10 million dollar donation to Chaffetz the day of the Comey letter on October 28. 2016.
“The latest report comes from Lisa Garner from the site Reason and Justice, who claims that the Jason Chaffetz campaign “took $10mil donation from Trump the same day he leaked Comey letter” (link), a claim which Daily Kos is presenting as plausible (link). This may initially sound absurd, and we can’t yet find the claim corroborated elsewhere, but it does fit with some of the other details coming from more proven sources. For instance the former Chaffetz staffer asserts that the FBI is investigating him for “campaign finance fraud” (link). And last week’s report asserted that the “fraud” in question involved Russia (link). Put those together and you have Chaffetz being busted by the FBI for illegally taking Russian money.”
“It would also explain why Jason Chaffetz took the risk of leaking James Comey’s letter about Hillary Clinton’s emails on October 28th, a plainly improper move that’s subsequently made him the subject of various ethics inquiries. Chaffetz had been hemming and hawing in his support of Donald Trump all along, and his decision to leak the letter before the election always seemed suspicious. As the chair of the House Oversight Committee, it would seemingly have been more advantageous for Chaffetz to sit on the letter until the day after the election, then use it as an excuse to resume his years of investigations into President Hillary Clinton. But if he had $10 million waving in his face, it’s a different story.”
“It’s been pointed out that it would have been completely illegal for Trump to donate $10 million to the Jason Chaffetz campaign. But that’s not an argument against the legitimacy of this premise. It’s actually an argument that bolsters it, as Chaffetz is now under FBI investigation for campaign finance fraud. It’s also notable that Trump made the out-of-character move of donating $10 million of his own money to his campaign, which was announced on October 29th (link) – one day after Chaffetz leaked the Comey letter. Is that the same $10 million that supposedly made its way to Chaffetz? And considering that Trump was allegedly the recipient of hundreds of millions of dollars of Russian money laundered through Deutsche Bank (link), did this $10 million flow from Russia to Trump to Chaffetz?”
Time will tell more, but certainly Chaffetz is acting like a man in some serious trouble.
This would be another good question for Comey: is he aware of any such payment? That Trump had advanced knowledge of his letter, the allegedly new 650,000 emails, etc?
P.S. As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
