We Now Know the GOP Engaged in *Conscious* Treason
As John McCain always says there are just going to be new shoes to drop every few days-now as McCain has admitted, it’s more like everyday.
So this story published yesterday just before 6 PM EST of course was immediately overshadowed by the huge news that the DOJ has appointed a Special Counsel. Eureka. Not a moment too soon.
However, while this story won’t lead the headlines it’s pretty shocking in of itself. It shows that the GOP knew about this all along, they had foreknowledge of Trump’s Russia problem and they didn’t care because party before country. Because Mitch McConnell cares about nothing but partisan power and Paul Ryan cares about nothing but gutting Medicare and handing out the bones of it to his rich GOP friends.
So they knew about Trump-Russia and chose to sit on it.
Josh Barro, while critical, subtly assumes a less damning interpretation.
“I believe Kevin McCarthy was joking last June, when he remarked to Republican colleagues that he thought Donald Trump was in the pay of Russian President Vladimir Putin.”
“But consider, for a second, whyMcCarthy would have thought this joke, which came to light Wednesday, would be funny.”
“Consider what it says about what he and House Speaker Paul Ryan and other Republican leaders realized about Trump nearly a year ago — and then went ahead and tried to get him elected president anyway.”
“McCarthy, the House majority leader, didn’t say “I think Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is paying Trump” — that wouldn’t have been funny because it wouldn’t have made any sense.”
“Putin is paying Trump” worked as a joke because Trump had a habit of taking Russia’s side in major geopolitical disputes, which was weird since Russia is a major geopolitical adversary of the US.
“It’s like saying “Is Wendy’s paying him?” about your friend who won’t shut up about Wendy’s nuggets, except if Wendy’s were a hostile power that hoped to undermine Western democracies.”
“Like many jokes, the humor here comes from the kernel of truth behind it: Trump acted as if he was under Russian influence, and it was reasonable to be worried that, if Trump became president, he would put Russian interests ahead of American ones.”
But this is about more than Trump’s-very weird- Putin love. I just think it would be great if we could be closer to Russia.
After seeing him hand Russia state secrets in the Oval Office we get an idea what ‘Getting along better with Russia’ looks like.
But this bombshell in the Washington Post is about more than Trump’s weird public praise of Putin.
“Before the conversation, McCarthy and Ryan had emerged from separate talks at the Capitol with Ukrainian Prime Minister Vladimir Groysman, who had described a Kremlin tactic of financing populist politicians to undercut Eastern European democratic institutions.”
“News had just broken the day before in The Washington Post that Russian government hackers had penetrated the computer network of the Democratic National Committee, prompting McCarthy to shift the conversation from Russian meddling in Europe to events closer to home.”
Some of the lawmakers laughed at McCarthy’s comment. Then McCarthy quickly added: “Swear to God.”
“Ryan instructed his Republican lieutenants to keep the conversation private, saying: “No leaks. . . . This is how we know we’re a real family here.”
“The remarks remained secret for nearly a year.”
First of all, if this were a joke why’d Ryan insist it remain private?
@davidfrum If McCarthy were only joking why'd Paul Ryan say to keep it between them?

It also shows that the GOP knew not just about Trump being in with Russia but that the DNC hacks were done by the Russians. They knew this and chose to squelch it. Because it benefitted their party and ideological interests.
The party of treason. Later in October, Mitch McConnell squelched a public statement on Russian interference-though Obama should have released it anyway over McConnell’s treasonous objections.
So despite the way the GOP has publicly tried to laugh off Trump Russia in public as just lurid conspiracy theorizing by Democrats with sour grapes while they knew all along that this was happening and chose to look the other way.
Ryan mentioned his meeting with Groysman, prompting Rodgers to ask: “How are things going in Ukraine?” according to the recording.
“The situation was difficult, Ryan said. Groysman, he said, had told him that Russian-backed forces were firing 30 to 40 artillery shells into Ukrainian territory every day. And the prime minister described Russian tactics that include “financing our populists, financing people in our governments to undo our governments.”
“Ryan said Russia’s goal was to “turn Ukraine against itself.” Groysman underlined Russia’s intentions, saying, “They’re just going to roll right through us and go to the Baltics and everyone else,” according to Ryan’s summary of the prime minister’s remarks in the recording.”
“Yes,” Rodgers said in agreement, noting that the Russians were funding nongovernmental organizations across Europe as part of a wider “propaganda war.”
“Maniacal,” Ryan said. “And guess, guess who’s the only one taking a strong stand up against it? We are.”
Rodgers disagreed. “We’re not . . . we’re not . . . but, we’re not,” she said.
That’s when McCarthy brought the conversation about Russian meddling around to the DNC hack, Trump and Rohrabacher.
“I’ll guarantee you that’s what it is. . . . The Russians hacked the DNC and got the opp [opposition] research that they had on Trump,” McCarthy said with a laugh.
Ryan asked who the Russians “delivered” the opposition research to.
“There’s . . . there’s two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump,” McCarthy said, drawing some laughter. “Swear to God,” McCarthy added.
“This is an off the record,” Ryan said.
Some lawmakers laughed at that.”
“PS. Last October I was premature with this prediction:
We are currently in the circular firing squad phase. I eagerly await the “Hitler was so pissed the generals let him down that he decided to destroy Germany when he knew that he was going to lose” phase.
“But I still think that’s coming. When a political party has been naughty, there’s a high price to pay. And the GOP has been very, very naughty.”
PPS. Some anti-Trump people claimed that I was too complacent in claiming that America’s democracy was strong enough to push back against Trump authoritarian tendencies. I think we are seeing a pretty strong pushback already. Even if Trump stays in office, he will be on a very short leash—Congress will not tolerate any more of this stuff (and I’m not even sure he’ll survive this.)
Yes-the GOP has been very naughty.
“Ex-NSA Exec: Republicans Will See “Large-Scale Political Cleansing”
“What’s important to understand is that no matter the elation that partisans may feel in being vindicated, the Republican complicity in compromising America’s democracy is a national disaster.”
“The GOP knew about Putin’s rise within their party, but kept it secret.”
The GOP has been ‘very naughty’ for eight or nine years. They used to say politics ends at the water’s edge.
Then came Mitch McConnell and the 2009 GOP. Rather than work with Obama and his party to whip the worst recession since 1932, they decided their own partisan interest was better served in opposing him at every point, fighting the Great Recession be damned.
What about the chance this slows down the recover? Feature not a bug-it will all be blamed on Obummer as he’s the President. This worked beyond their wildest dreams. To this day many leftists blame not Mitch McConnell for the slow recovery but Obama.
Now we know even foreign subversion was not enough for Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell to put any interest even the national interest over their own partisan and ideological interests. They’ve been naught indeed and history must not be kind.
P.S. As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
