MIchael Flynn Pleads the 5th; and Dem Document From Oversight Committee Suggests Why
This stuff writes itself.
If you plead the fifth it means your guilty.
“President Donald Trump last year slammed Hillary Clinton staffers who requested immunity or invoked their Fifth Amendment rights in response to requests to testify about the former secretary of state’s private email server.”
“If you are not guilty of a crime, what do you need immunity for?” Trump said at a campaign rally in Florida in September.
“The mob takes the Fifth Amendment,” Trump said at a campaign event in Iowa later that month. “If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?”
That was then.
“Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, in March requested immunity from prosecution in exchange for testifying before the House and Senate intelligence committees about Russia’s interference in the 2016 election. And on Monday, Flynn is expected to flout a Senate subpoena for documents related to his contacts with Russia by invoking his Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination.”
The White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, has also weighed in on the amendment, tweeting in 2013, “Why do u take the 5th if you have done nothing wrong and have nothing to hide?”
“Flynn himself said during an interview last year with MSNBC commentator Chuck Todd, “When you are given immunity, that means you have probably committed a crime.”
Then there was If I did 10% of what she did, I’d be in jail. Uh…
But there seems to be good reason for Flynn to clam up.
“Michael T. Flynn, President Trump’s former national security adviser, misled Pentagon investigators about his income from companies in Russia and contacts with officials there when he applied for a renewal of his top-secret security clearance last year, according to a letter released Monday by the top Democrat on the House oversight committee.”
“Mr. Flynn, who resigned 24 days into the Trump administration, told investigators in February 2016 that he had received no income from foreign companies and had only “insubstantial contact” with foreign nationals, according to the letter. In fact, Mr. Flynn had sat two months earlier beside President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia at a Moscow gala for RT, the Kremlin-financed television network, which paid Mr. Flynn more than $45,000 to attend the event and give a separate speech.”
“His failure to make those disclosures and his apparent attempt to mislead the Pentagon could put Mr. Flynn in further legal jeopardy. Intentionally lying to federal investigators is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison. Separately, he also faces legal questions over failing to properly register as a foreign agent for lobbying he did last year on behalf of Turkey while advising the Trump campaign, which is also a felony.”
“The House letter, written by Representative Elijah E. Cummings of Maryland, was made public hours after Mr. Flynn formally rejected a subpoena from senators investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and chose to instead invoke his right against self-incrimination, a person familiar with his decision said.”
To be sure, invoking the fifth is far from a get out of jail free card.
“Mr. Flynn had been ordered by the Senate Intelligence Committee to hand over emails and other records related to any dealings with Russians as part of that panel’s investigation into Russian election meddling. His decision to invoke his Fifth Amendment right puts him at risk of being held in contempt of Congress, which can also result in a criminal charge.”
“In other Mike Flynn news, Louise Mensch is-as always-ahead of the curve. Per her sources, Flynn has turned on Trump and already has had one lengthy interview with the FBI.”
“Multiple sources with links to the intelligence and law enforcement communities say that Lt. Gen Mike Flynn has turned on Donald Trump, and has already had at least one lengthy interview with the FBI.”
“General Flynn has not been offered a deal as of yet, these sources say. They indicate that as of this writing Flynn has not been arrested. He would likely be offered a chance to surrender himself, sources report, when that time comes.”
As for Trump’s ‘Stay strong’ text, per her sources, Flynn took that as a threat:
“Mike Flynn may also have interpreted Donald Trump’s text to him, ‘Stay Strong,’ on the day the subpoenas for evidence in the ongoing case against him were announced, as a threat. Sources believe that Flynn informed the FBI, and multiple other persons, of Trump’s text himself.”
Her sources also say he’s been indicted. There is much skepticism on this claim of a ‘sealed indictment’ but we’ve seen this movie before. She and Claude Taylor have many times been ridiculed only to be vindicated in the long run.
Even the one thing she did appear dead wrong about-Weiner and the alleged sexts with an underage girl-she may have apologized too soon. But more on that tomorrow-I can’t bury too many headlines under other ones!
In still other Mike Flynn news, Peter King (NY-2)-who I hope to challenge in 2018 is coming out with a full throated defense of King.

King has won 13 straight NY House-District 3 until 2012, now District 2 since-so I’m surprised. He’s also embraced TrumpCare. I imagined with all his success he was smarter than that.
On the other hand this does seem to underscore Mensch’s sources that claim Flynn has turned on Trump. Certainly when Flynn’s lawyer said ‘He certainly has a story to tell’ it didn’t sound at all good for Herr Trump.
P.S. Again, I’m running for Congress vs. Peter King folks. I don’t know if many readers think I’m kidding.
As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
But let me quote from a friend on Twitter:
New poll vs. Trumpster Peter King (NY 2) has me within 11 points! Donate PL… https://t.co/lw3ll33LA7

I’ve noticed that often folks are very supportive of my running but then say ‘I would love to support you but I’m not in NY.’
Ok. But I mean I don’t live in Georgia but have contributed a decent amount to Jon Ossoff. These days who can afford to only worry about local races? More than anyone particular candidate we need a Democratic Congress.
I hope to be a part of that-the big dream is to get on the select committee that impeaches him.
So all support-moral, political-helps. But don’t rule out finaicial if you can spare a couple of bucks. And literally $5 from each fan of my blog or well wisher for the campaign helps a lot. I’m a total newbie to politics and face a really uphill fight-I believe I can be a compelling candidate but I badly need publicity and name recognition.
And that poll I published was not cheap-and it’s just the start! So please contribute whatever you are able to. Thanks a lot.
