Trump on the Stage With Netanyahu: I Never Mentioned the Word israel
We’re now living in the time when hyperbole is dead. Onion writers are cutting staff-after all no satirist can give us a world more absurd and implausible than the one we occupy every day. Us and Alice in her Wonderland.
Jennifer Rubin wishes this were a Saturday Night Live skit.
“If only it were a “Saturday Night Live” sketch. The Associated Press reports:
President Donald Trump says he never “mentioned the word or the name Israel” during a recent conversation with top Russian diplomats.
Speaking alongside Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump was referencing revelations that he divulged classified information about an Islamic State threat in a recent meeting with Russia’s foreign minister and ambassador.
U.S. officials said the information originated from Israel.
Trump says, “I never mentioned the word or the name Israel in that conversation.” But it was never alleged that Trump told the Russians that Israel was the source of the intelligence, just that he shared the information with the Russians.
“Moreover, by conveying his message in Israel, he obviously confirmed that the information came from Israel.”
But Saturday Night Live can’t write a skit this good. No one can. It’s just not fair to ironists-as irony is dead as is hyperbole.
Trump loved his visit to Saudi Arabia as he shares ‘Saudi Arabian values’-you know, dictatorship ruled by dynastic families.
His visit to democratic countries-even one as presumably friendly as Israel-from the start worked less seamlessly. Last night Netanyahu had to threaten his ministers to get them to show up to meet Herr Trump at Tel Aviv.
One of their gripes, no doubt, was that Trump handed over their classified info to the Russians in some weird Oval Office victory dance.
Now Trump just confirms: yes, it was Israeli intelligence but don’t worry, I didn’t say the word ‘Israel.’
Really the best part of this whole absurd spectacle-it’d be funny if it weren’t so serious-was watching Netanyahu in real time as Trump goes here.
“Trump, in Israel for the second leg of his first foreign trip as president, delivered brief remarks alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The two then shook hands for the cameras as reporters shouted questions.”
“The intelligence cooperation is terrific,” Netanyahu told reporters. Trump paused for a moment and halted the press from leaving the room. “Hey, folks,” he said. “Hey, folks. Folks. Folks.”
“Just so you understand, I never mentioned the word or the name ‘Israel.’ Never mentioned it during that conversation,” Trump said.
“They were all saying I did,” he added, looking toward Netanyahu as he gestured toward the press. “So you had another story wrong. Never mentioned the word ‘Israel.’”
What was funny was Bib’s expression. After he said the ‘intelligence cooperation is terrific’ you could seem very gently trying to shove Trump along-for his own good. But no, Trump has to say it. It’s hardly going to reassure anyone in Israel. While Bibi is a Trump shill, he knows perfectly well that DT is out of favor with many of his ministers. This won’t help. It will have the opposite effect.
His goal on this trip was to get away from Russia for a little while. But doing this has brought the issue back front and center.
Back to Jennifer Rubin:
“Trump’s error is so laughably horrible it left many observers shaking their heads. “I can’t imagine why the President would be commenting on this in a public setting on camera,” said former ambassador Eric S. Edelman. “To the extent that information was unintentionally shared in the conversations with the Russians, he will now be seen to be confirming the origin. It is just further evidence of his total lack of understanding of the uses and abuses of classified information.”
“In any event, the likelihood that allies will entrust classified material to this president is diminishing daily. With regard to the issue of Russian collusion, Trump’s conduct does give support to the conclusion that he was/is a “useful idiot” — someone so vain, self-absorbed, untutored and irrational that he can be led around by the nose by the Russians. Put differently, “He thinks, and talks, like a guilty 8-year-old,” says frequent Trump critic Eliot Cohen.”
I see some people saying that Trump sure was stupid to have fired Comey. But they don’t know just how bad it is. Assuming Trump were innocent his actions are criminally stupid-and against his own interests. But just maybe he’s not innocent. That seems much more plausible.
P.S. As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
