Israel Military not so Impressed by Trump’s Secret Plan to Destroy ISIS; Trump is Making Things Worse
When Trump was-illegitimately-elected it was a terrible thing for most Americans. However, Israel seemed to have reasons to be happy. Trump had talked about moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem and Trump seemed to be giving Netanyahu what he wanted in terms of not criticizing Israeli settlements as Obama had done.
Remember the gnashing of teeth after Obama simply abstained-and so allowed-the UN resolution condemning settlements back in December to pass?
And Bibi clearly wasn’t sorry to see Obama go.
While it sucked for our country, Trump’s elevation seemed to be good news for Israel’s own military interests. Yet what was notable on Sunday was that Netanyahu had to compel his ministers to show up to meet Trump at Tel Aviv. One issue they weren’t happy with Trump about, of course, is his leaking their classified info to the Russians.
After Bibi forced his minsters to meet with Herr Trump things didn’t exactly go swimmingly.
Netanyahu tried to end things and gently direct Trump away after saying ‘Intelligence cooperation is terrific, it’s never been better’ but Trump had to have his say, ‘I never mentioned the word Israel.’
This just added insult to injury for Israeli intelligence while Trump opened up more focus on his leaking to Russia here at home.
Homer says ‘Doh!’
As for Trump’s secret plan on ISIS, it’s not exactly going forward according to plan. Israel doesn’t seem impressed here either:
“Israeli Officers: You’re Doing ISIS Wrong.”
“The United States is headed for disaster in Syria, some in Israel are warning.”
“In the view of the Israeli military and intelligence units I visited over several days in late April, the U.S. strategy in Iraq and Syria may be making the situation only worse. We’re radicalizing the local population and spreading the hardest-core militants to sow havoc in neighboring Lebanon—which the officers I spoke with fear may already be on the verge on collapse—and Jordan. Still others are escaping the onslaught to Europe and possibly America.”
“I am not sure it will be easy to defeat ISIS, as you are claiming to do,” Army Brig. Gen. Ram Yavne, the head of the IDF’s Strategic Division, told me in Tel Aviv, expressing a level of puzzlement shared by a number of other top commanders about the U.S. military obsession with a group that they do not consider a major strategic threat.”
Remember how Obama was pilloried for calling ISIS the JV team?
“Several officials pointed out that even the largest estimates of the number of ISIS’s fiercest adherents are on par with Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that controls the Gaza Strip.”
“But Trump sees it differently. He has authorized his military commanders to step up U.S. military involvement in both Iraq and Syria, including granting the Pentagon more authority to go after ISIS targets and to insert hundreds of additional American forces into Syria. As recently as Friday, Secretary of Defense James Mattis vowed to “destroy” ISIS, first by taking Raqqa and then supporting the campaign by local Arab and Kurdish forces to clear other Syrian cities along the Euphrates River, where the group has a significant presence. “We’re there to drive ISIS to its knees,” he told reporters, saying the more aggressive U.S. strategy seeks the group’s “annihilation.”
“But some Israeli commanders, who agreed to share their assessments of the Syria conflict on the condition they not be identified, went as far as saying that the American actions in Syria and Iraq, where U.S.-backed Iraqi forces recently liberated the city of Mosul, could be turning ISIS and its affiliates elsewhere in the region into an even bigger threat to the West.”
“The worst is yet to come,” one intelligence official said.
Indeed, there were many reports that ISIS was pulling for Trump as well. As Hillary said, he’s a great recruitment vehicle. Trump’s ‘strategy’ has been to dial back restrictions on the US military meant to hold down civilian casualties.
Whatever else the impact of Trump’s ISIS strategy has been, it’s led to a tripling of civilian casualties in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen.
What better recruitment tool for ISIS than that?
P.S. Again, I’m running for Congress vs. Peter King folks. I don’t know if many readers think I’m kidding.
As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
But let me quote from a friend on Twitter:
