Trump’s File Extension is All About Hiding His Tax Return From Robert Mueller
I thought he had an audit? The world’s longest audit apparently. Now suddenly we’re hearing that Trump is filing for a tax extension for 2016.
Oh, so 2016 is not under audit then? What about 2015? The audit talk never made any sense. The IRS has stated clearly it doesn’t prevent you from releasing your taxes publicly. And how long is this audit going on for?
Why not release previous years? How about the audit letter from the IRS. Indeed, as much flack as he’s taken for not releasing his taxes to the public, you have to presume he’s hiding something pretty incriminating.
I speculated a few weeks back that maybe it shows a lot of Russian money, associations with Russian bankers and mobsters.
It seems likely that it’s not just what they show in terms of income and taxes paid but also the sources of this income that makes him willing to take all the heat from not releasing them.
As for Mueller, this rigid reluctance tells him its something he wants to and needs to see. It’s hard not to think that seeing Trump’s tax returns wouldn’t shed a lot of light onto his financial relationship with Russia and other troubling relationships.
And now, with reports Mueller will want to see Trump’s taxes, he’s suddenly filing for an extension.
“President Trump has filed for an extension for his 2016 tax return, White House press secretary Sean Spicer confirmed Saturday. No further details were provided on why he needed the six-month extension, but the news is likely to raise questions among critics who want Trump to follow the example of his predecessors and release his tax returns. Despite promising to release his tax information during the presidential campaign, Trump has since refused to do so, saying only that he will release the tax returns after an IRS audit. IRS officials have said an audit does not prohibit taxpayers from releasing tax information.”
Not hard to figure out why he’s suddenly deciding it’s time to file an extension.
“Donald Trump has filed for an extension when it comes to filing his 2016 tax returns. Although the filing deadline was in April, news of Trump’s extension filing just broke this evening. Officially, it means he now has until mid October to file. Unofficially, there is only one plausible reason for Trump to have asked for the extension: he doesn’t want Special Counsel Robert Mueller to be able to get his hands on those returns in the mean time.”
“From an accounting standpoint, there’s no reason for this delay. From his leaked 1995 returns, we know that in the years where Trump is short on money, he simply plays accounting games so he doesn’t have to pay any taxes. So even if he is currently broke, as is widely suspected, this can’t be about trying to buy time to come up with the money to pay his tab. Nor is it realistic to believe that he simply couldn’t pull his filings together in time, considering it’s handled entirely by his accountants.”
“And yet nonetheless, here comes the news that Trump has filed for a 2016 extension (source: ABC News). Despite popular misconception, a sitting president’s tax returns are not automatically released to the public. Instead it’s merely a customary thing that’s always been done, and Trump doesn’t have to do it (source: taxhistory.org). But as we previously reported, Special Counsel Robert Mueller can seize Trump’s tax returns any time he likes (source: Palmer Report), and Trump wouldn’t even necessarily know it’s happening.”
But this stunt will probably backfire as it can’t stop Mueller from looking back on previous years.
“So this is rather clearly an attempt on Trump’s part at preventing Mueller from getting his hands on those 2016 tax returns. But this won’t stop Mueller from being able to access Trump’s returns from 2015 and earlier. And for that matter, Mueller can seize financial records and piece together Trump’s would-be 2016 return on his own. If anything, this stunt by Trump may backfire by prompting Mueller to go ahead and seize Trump’s previous years to determine what Trump is trying to hide.”
Everything Trump does makes it worse. His firing Comey led to Mueller. His tax extension may just lead Mueller to seize all this pre 2016 years.
Like Michael Flynn, surely these tax returns also have a story to tell.
P.S. As we saw in my poll out last week, the long awaited poll results are in, and right now I’m just 11 points down vs. Peter King (GOP-NY-District 2). And the voters don’t even know who I am yet.
There is nothing more important in getting answers to Trump-Russia collusion than a Democratic House in 2019. Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
