The Trump Tapes: So Was He Lying Then or is He Lying Now?
You’ll have to excuse me if it’s not readily apparent to me. All I know is that he’s a pathological liar who, uh, lies a lot. A real lot. Lies 70% of the time, so whatever he says at any given moment is more likely to be a lie than the truth.
“Trump says he has no Comey tapes.”
‘I did not make, and do not have, any such recordings,’ Trump tweets, a day before a deadline to hand over any tapes.”
“President Donald Trump on Thursday said he did not make and does not have any “tapes” or recordings of his conversations with former FBI Director James Comey, ending a nearly six-week saga he kicked off by suggesting in a tweet that such tapes existed.”
“With all of the recently reported electronic surveillance, intercepts, unmasking and illegal leaking of information, I have no idea whether there are ‘tapes’ or recordings of my conversations with James Comey, but I did not make, and do not have, any such recordings,” Trump stated in a pair of tweets on Thursday afternoon.
“Trump’s tweeted announcement, which came a day before a House Intelligence Committee deadline for the White House to produce any such tapes, was drafted with the help of his communications team on Thursday morning, according to a White House official.”
A lot of people seem to assume that he’s telling the truth now. I am happy to see that Adam Schiff is not making any assumptions:
“While Trump averted an immediate showdown with Congress over the existence of such tapes, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence panel said he planned to talk to his Republican counterpart, Rep. Mike Conaway (R-Texas), about whether it’s necessary to subpoena the White House to be completely sure the president is telling the truth.”
“We would hope that we could rely on a statement from the president,” Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), told reporters. “Unfortunately, the president has indicated in other statements that he is more than willing to play fast and loose with the truth.”
Notably, Trump’s tweets left open the possibility that someone else could have such recordings.”
Yes it does. And, incidentally, that may be the truth. There is a lot of reason to doubt that taping WH conversations did end with Richard Nixon.
Tim O’Brien, who admittedly has a lot of experience with Donald Trump, said all along he thought Trump was bluffing. This is due to his own experience when Trump sued him for writing a book that suggested Trump may not be a billionaire but have only $150 to $450 million dollars.
Trump had claimed to have tapes of conversations with O’Brien that proved O’Brien a liar. But in court he ‘admitted he didn’t have any tapes.’
“He’s said this over the years to reporters when they go into the Trump organization, ‘I just want to let you know that I’m taping you right now,’” O’Brien said. “And he said it multiple times during my interviews with him. He said that into my own tape recorder when I recorded our interviews.”
“But when he sat down for the deposition, my attorney said, ‘Mr. Trump, do you have a taping system?’” O’Brien added. And he said no. And [my attorney] said, ‘Why did you say this to Mr. O’Brien.’ And he essentially said, ‘I wanted to intimidate him.’”
However, it’s possible that the lie was that he didn’t have the tapes. Think about it. He had tried to intimidate O’Brien that he had tapes. The hope was this would make O’Brien back off of writing his book or at least of writing the parts Trump didn’t approve of.
But did he really have any tapes? Maybe he did but in court he realized that the tapes would actually work against he himself, Donald Trump.
Remember Nixon kept the tapes because he thought they protected himself-even though they actually sunk him.
It’s possible Trump does have tapes of Comey but realizes that the last thing he wants is for us to see them.
“BEFORE TRUMP WAS PRESIDENT, HE TAPE-RECORDED CONVERSATIONS, FORMER EMPLOYEES SAY.”
“If President Donald Trump did, indeed, tape his conversations with now-fired FBI Director James Comey, it might not have been the first time.”
“Sources have come forward to claim Trump recorded his interactions before taking office, with at least three former employees telling The Wall Street Journal they saw the tycoon use a device to tape conversations at Trump Tower in New York City. That article follows a June 2016 report from BuzzFeed featuring four ex-workers claiming Trump listened in on calls at his Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago, in the mid-2000s.”
The Daily Mail:
“The ex-employees told the Wall Street Journal that Trump had one or more recording devices that he would sometimes use to tape conversations with associates.”
“They claim to have seen the devices being used to record conversations when they worked for Trump as high-level employees over a period spanning 30 years.”
“A fourth person, who was an associate of Trump’s, told the outlet he knew the then-businessman had recorded one of their conversations because it was later used as evidence in a lawsuit.”
There are also stories of guests of Trump at Trump Tower telling him they want a coke and his executive assistant, Rona, bringing in a glass of coke with ice-even though Trump hadn’t told her of the request.
So Congressman Schiff is right to be skeptical and a good place to start might be to subpoena Rona-who may well be Trump’s version of Nixon’s Rose Mary Woods.
P.S. So the Gravis poll against Peter King NY2 and it has good news-almost too good to believe.
In my March poll I trailed King by 11 and thought that was very good news. Now Gravis has me up by 10? Still, the moment of truth is next week when Gravis writes up the press release.
I can use any help I can get at this point-volunteers or supporters who live in NY 2. Donations whatever your zip code. These days we can’t just support a local Dem we need a Dem Congress. Which is why I’ve donated few hundred to Jon Ossoff.
Please donate to help me in my part of the effort to fight for a Dem House-$5 or $10 can do so much.
If you feel that you can’t I, of course, understand-who is rich these days? But please do me one favor: ask yourself privately, mentally, if you really can’t spare $5 dollars. If you can honestly say you can’t, no worries.
We can have a Dem Congress, we must have a Dem Cogress, and we will.
Thank you. We must have a Dem House. And so, we will.
