Michael Cohen: I Still Haven’t Been to Prague and Felix Sater Made me do it
This is what Michael Cohen told the House Intelligence Committee-through an eight page letter by his lawyer.
“President Donald Trump’s longtime personal attorney and friend Michael Cohen “vehemently” denied to Congress allegations regarding himself in a dossier alleging ties between Trump and Russia, the New York Times reported Wednesday evening.”
“The New York Times reported that in an eight-page letter to the House Intelligence Committee, Cohen’s lawyer Stephen M. Ryan claimed allegations in the dossier regarding Cohen “are false and remain wholly unsubstantiated.”
This is zombie argument you always hear about the Steele Dossier-that it’s ‘unverified and so it’s wrong.’
“Actually some of it has been verified but even those parts not wholly verified have far from been proven false. That’s the key with ‘unverified’ with intelligence: that it hasn’t been proven false is also notable. Rest assured that as an overall body of work, the Steele Dossier has a lot of credibility with the intel agencies.”
“Mr. Cohen vehemently denies the claims made in the dossier about him,” Ryan wrote, according to the report. “We have not uncovered a single document that would in any way corroborate the dossier’s allegations regarding Mr. Cohen, nor do we believe that any such document exists.”
“According to the New York Times, Cohen denied that he had ever traveled to Prague, and said he was “not aware of any impropriety related to Mr. Trump’s ‘relationship’ with Russia, nor is he aware of Mr. Trump having an improper political relationship with officials of the Russian Federation.”
The issue of whether he want to visit Prague is something of a red herring. Again, some of this will be approximations based on incomplete knowledge. So it’s certainly possible that he didn’t literally go to Prague in August, 2016-maybe it was another former Soviet satellite in Eastern Europe.
In any case, Cohen’s attempt to disprove he went to Prague was for from adequate itself: he tweeted a picture of his passport.
Louise Mensch went into this is some impressive detail at the time.
Back to TalkingPointsMemo:
“The Kremlin on Wednesday confirmed that Cohen reached out during the 2016 election for help with a stalled Trump-branded business project in Russia.”
“Cohen blamed Felix Sater, his friend and another longtime Trump associate, for pushing him to reach out. Sater in 2015 predicted that Russian President Vladimir Putin would help Trump win the election and bragged of his connections to the Russian leader.”
So, my buddy Felix Sater-who’s a convicted Russia mobster and who Trump denied knowing back in 2012 made me reach out to Putin.
Speaking of the Steele Dossier, let’s recall the substance of the claims it makes about Michael Cohen. Back to Louise Mensch:
Inanely, CNN claimed that they had it “confirmed” that Michael Cohen was not in Prague, Czech Republic, when the dossier said he was.
“They based this on the fact that, as they claimed, “a different Michael Cohen” had been in Prague around that time, according to a passport stamp. This has nothing to do with the matter one way or the other, and a little thought by CNN would have borne that out. The dossier alleged that Cohen went to Prague and another EU country; that was rated as low confidence as to both location and to exact timing. August, at one point; late August or early September at another point. Furthermore, Steele did not, contrary to CNN’s implication, present location or timing as a fact. It was secondhand; he reported as fact that Kremlin insiders said this, and Steele rated the exact location and timing as low confidence.”
“More interesting was the substance of Steele’s allegations as to why – he reported sources said – Cohen was meeting Russians outside of the US. Firstly, it was to pay off hackers. The dossier made the claim that these were both the hackers who had attacked Clinton, and a company that ran a Twitter botnet (possibly also a Facebook one as I shall later report).”
Felix Sater had predicted he’s going to be the most ‘colorful person in America’ that both he and Trump are going to prison.
It’s already starting.
What’s clear is that Sater and Cohen are very good friends. They also were major principals on the so-called Ukrainian peace plan back in February.
