Could the Kushner Private Emails Become Trump’s Version of the Watergate Tapes?
Regarding the above picture, remember that Bannon and Priebus-as well as Gary Cohn, Ivanka Trump, and Kellyann Conway also have used private email for government business.
Speaking of Kellyann Conway she’s: now under investigation in her own right:
But regarding the private emails there are a lot of dimensions to this.
1. Government records must be available.
3. Just the sheer hypocrisy of it.
Heidi Kitrosser, law professor, University of Minnesota:
“Legal issues aside, I think the larger issue here is the administration’s astounding hypocrisy. Throughout the campaign, President Trump and his supporters focused relentlessly on Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server, describing it as “bigger than Watergate” and the like. At best, Trump administration officials’ own email practices suggest that they never believed what they said throughout the campaign about the perils of private email usage. At worst, their behavior reflects their belief that the rules simply don’t apply to them.”
How did the media ever let Trump get away with Crooked Hillary?
4. These emails may become very much of interest to the Russia investigation. It’s for this reason I argue they may prove to be Trump’s version of the Watergate tapes.
Andy Wright, law professor, Savannah Law School:
“The more significant issue is how personal device use will affect ongoing criminal and congressional investigations. Widespread use of non-archived devices raises investigator suspicions. The White House staff who have engaged in such conduct have now jeopardized the privacy of their personal email accounts, text messages, and social media accounts. It will make it harder for the White House to narrow the scope of document productions.”
“Recall that email production compliance related to Benghazi morphed into investigative interest in all of Secretary Hillary Clinton’s emails. It has already prompted a separate, bipartisan records management investigation by my old committee, House Oversight and Government Reform.”
Exactly. These private emails of Kushner, Reince, Bannon and friends may prove to be Trump’s Watergate tapes.
“Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump ‘must leave White House’ after private email scandal exposes hypocrisy.”
“President’s daughter and son-in-law seemingly at fault for same security violation that father Donald repeatedly attacked rival presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for on campaign trail.”
“The continued presence of Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump in the West Wing constitutes both a legal liability and a political embarrassment for President Trump. The couple have not a single identifiable accomplishment in office between the two of them. Ivanka Trump, however, has been on defence, whining about unfair expectations and trying to wiggle out of responsibility for failing to influence her father. Kushner wound up at odds with the State Department and was there to cheer on disastrous personnel decisions (e.g. hiring Paul Manafort during the campaign, firing former FBI director James B. Comey).”
Kushner, you will recall, has a host of potential legal problems stemming from participation in a meeting with Russian officials at Trump Tower during the campaign; a meeting with the head of a sanctioned Russian bank during the transition; encouragement for the president to fire Comey (an action that may be considered obstruction of justice) and failure to disclose all his foreign contacts on his security clearance forms.”
Actually Rubin missed one: Kushner was also present at the (in)famous Russia meeting with the Kremlin linked lawyer in June, 2016 along with Donald Jr and Manafort.
To be sure, you can’t blame Rubin: Kushner’s list of Russia exposure is indeed very long.
“No one said this crowd was subtle. Nevertheless, Mueller can subpoena the emails and obtain information about rerouting the accounts as part of his ongoing investigation. Now imagine Republicans’ reaction if Hillary Clinton had been caught moving her private email account that had been used improperly for government business over to the Clinton Foundation. I think the chant would be: “Lock her up!”
Again, it’s the hypocrisy.
In a way it’s ironic that emails will take Trump down as he does do one thing right: he doesn’t use private email. But everyone else in his world does.
“Rinat Akhmetshin, the Russian-American lobbyist who met with Donald Trump Jr. at Trump Tower in June 2016, had one consistent message for the journalists who met him over the years at the luxury hotels where he stayed in Moscow, London and Paris, or at his home on a leafy street in Washington: Never use email to convey information that needed to be kept secret.”
Mr. Akhemsthin-‘formerly’ of Soviet intelligence-knows where of he speaks:
“While not, he insisted, an expert in the technical aspects of hacking nor, a spy, Mr. Akhmetshin talked openly about how he had worked with a counterintelligence unit while serving with the Red Army after its 1979 invasion of Afghanistan and how easy it was to find tech-savvy professionals ready and able to plunder just about any email account.”
“A journalist who visited his home was given a thumb drive containing emails that had apparently been stolen by hackers working for one of his clients.”
“On another occasion, at a meeting with a New York Times reporter at the Ararat Park Hyatt hotel in Moscow, Mr. Akhmetshin, by then an American citizen, informed the journalist he had recently been reading one of his emails: a note sent by the reporter to a Russian-American defense lawyer who had once worked for Mikhail Khodorkovsky, the anti-Kremlin oligarch.”
He was also accused of being part of a global hacking conspiracy against a mining company. It’d be interesting to know where he was the night all those Democratic emails got hacked.
